Sports gels are great for active people. Runners use GU a lot. That's how I first found out about it. Runner's World did an article on all the different type of gels available. The one I've always preferred has been GU, PowerGel comes in at a distant second.
Whether you are a serious competitor or just out to have fun, GU is for you!
Gel is essentially like eating a sports bar, or at least the nutritional basis is the same - provide fuel for exercise. The delivery method is different. Gels tend to be sweeter and usually have more sugar. This is a good thing if you need energy delivered quickly to your body. Plus it eliminates the need to down lots of water like with sports bars. However, with the sweetness of most flavors you might really want some water.
Another thing I like about GU is that it doesn't weigh you down like a sports bar and it won't upset your stomach. GU helps you stay energized during workouts and races by providing the fuel your muscles need to perform well. GU is 20% simple / 80% complex carbohydrates which is a great ratio. For optimal performance, you should down a packet's worth of gel every 45 minutes. I recommend a GU flask to carry your gel it eliminates trash and makes consumption much easier. Another benefit of GU is that it assists your body in recovering too by replacing your depleted glucose stores.
GU was the first sports gel on the market. It is great and they deserve their fine reputation! GU uses the highest quality all natural ingredients, which is probably why it is known as the best tasting gel available! It is deffinatly my #1 choice. I tend to use GU mostly on my training runs and at races. I also sometimes use it during long cycling rides. Ocassionally, I'll take a pack or two on a hike too. My mom has uses GU as well when she runs. This is important for her because she is hypoglycemic so she's prone to blood sugar crashes, GU eliminates that.

I highly recommend GU gel. It is the best tasting, in my epinion, and comes in a groovy packet designed for easy consumption. Although, I recommend a gel flask or some type of gel container. This enables you to fit multiple packs of gel into one flask. It also eliminates trash because you don't have to carry the empty packages. I mainly use gels for runs of about 5 miles or more. Give it a try on your next training run or cycle and see if it agrees with your stomach (which it most likely will). You will enjoy the increase in your muscle endurance and reduced fatigue. GU also makes really groovy clothing products as well.
