| fbarassi's Full Review: Guardian 15000 Watt Ultra Source Portable Generato... |
I live in South Florida and purchased this generator because I was looking for something that would provide backup power for my home after a hurricane. I wanted something that would power my air conditioning as well as other major appliances which is why I went with 15kw instead of a smaller generator. I bought the 4582 from ReadyPower out of Georgia. (www.readypower.com) I was very pleased with the price and attention I got from the sales rep. at Ready Power who consulted with me about my needs and recommended the unit and who also made sure the generator was shipped out the very day I purchased it with no charge for shipping. The sales rep. even phoned me back after he got the order to confirm the arrival date given to him by the shipping company and provided me with information to check the status of the shipment on line.
One of the nice things about Generac is that they provide electronic copies of the user manuals for their products on their web site which allowed me to download the product manual prior to receiving the unit and familiarize myself with the product. Thus, when the generator showed up, I already had the necessary power cables set up to power my house and also had a good idea of the features of the product.
When the generator showed up I was very pleased with the unit. It is clearly a generator designed to support the heavy duty requirements and working environment of large construction projects and industrial demands. Residential backup seems to be more of an afterthought. It is very well built and is clearly a much more heavy duty generator than what one usually sees for residential backup. There was nothing on the unit that I found poorly designed or of poor quality. In fact, after reviewing the unit it is clear that Generac is a US company that still takes pride in making a well built, quality product that will last for years.
The generator is very easy to operate and maintain. I was worried about oil changes, but was very pleased at how easy and well thought out the unit is configured for performing this important maintenance task. It took me no more than 5 minutes to change the oil and filter, no special tools required.
Most importantly, I was also very pleased at how the unit performed at providing power for my entire house. I ran my AC off of the 30 amp plug, and the rest of my house off of the 50 amp plug, and had no problems whatsoever. I didn't run my hot water heater full time, but did put considerable load on the generator with lights, dishwasher, ceiling fans, washing machine, etc. with no problems. Also, the unit is rated at 10hrs. operation on a full tank of gas at half load. My experience was more like 14 hours on a full tank with more than half load.
Features I liked the most were the large mouthed plastic 16 gallon gas tank (important in humid South Florida) with gas gauge; battery charger; included PM kit with battery charging cables and replacement oil filter; high grade inflated wheels for mobility, ease of operability.
This generator can run your whole house for the fraction of the cost of permanent backup units, and has the advantage of being portable and useful for tasks beyond residential backup.
