| ziprz's Full Review: Milton Bradley Guesstures Board Game |
Here's a little story about how Guesstures turned an otherwise ho-hum evening into a roaring good time. It was holiday party season 1999, my wife and I had a gathering of 25 people at our home to enjoy some wine and cheese and some Christmas cookies. One of our friends gave us the game Guesstures as a gift. It really didn't cause much of a stir at the time, and people went about drinking more wine, and eating more food, and making merry. Then one of the guests declared, "Let's play Guesstures!"
Of course we had to read the directions aloud which is a challenge with that many people. The nice thing is that nearly everyone is familiar with charades. In a group this large there are always those naysayers that say they "can't act" or "don't want to look silly", but if you can stifle those people just a few minutes until play begins, you will find that these will be the first people laughing hysterically.
So we had 2 teams of slightly inebriated people egging on their first "Actor" to choose the cards that they are going to act. In "Scene 1" The Actor chooses four cards each with a 1 and 3 point word on it (1's being easier to act than 3's). You put the cards into "Mimer-Timer" in an order where you think you can get the most points, keeping in mind that the cards drop down 1 at a time. When the actor is ready he/she begins acting out the words. This is where our party just broke wide open. It was funny enough seeing Kevin acting out the word "pregnant" by diving for a couch pillow and stuffing it up his shirt. Then, to see the look on his face when, after all that effort he tried to pick up the card and had it slip through his fingers on its way into the timer, was really priceless. Everyone in the room was dying of laughter, and the missed card completely threw Kevin off so that he was a split second behind every one and ended up with no points (only cards that you grab before falling into the timer are counted as points). Play continues until everyone on each team has acted once. Then you move on to Scene 2 where each card has a 2 and a 4 point word on it. The winning team is that which has the most points at the end of the game. We stopped keeping track of points in the middle of scene 2 when we were all rolling on the floor laughing. Instead we kept nominating the most "entertaining" actors to keep doing the charades.
This little twist on charades really makes Guesstures a winner. It is fun in a large living room where flailing and screaming can be done. People of all ages can play this game. I played it when I was a kid, and I still enjoy it at 24. It is an excellent crowd pleaser - something to make a "gathering" into a PAR-TAY!
