Cindy, I think that if you examine carefully some of the real Gulag history - from Lenin's time up through Stalin's - you'll see that Jews were indeed singled out for death and labor camps just as in the Fascist arena. Jews were despised by many in Russia and still are = there's a new book for you to find now in the grisly details, containing a lot of info from post-Berlin Wall Soviet archives.
GULAG by Anne Applebaum - a big, fat book of infamy.
I am waiting for Hollywood to go ballistic on the horrors of the Soviet regime and its millions upon millions dead - but will I wait in vain?
I have read that the death toll on Planet EArth attributed to Marx's sadly misguided and wretched followers to be approximatly 100 million.
When you're a Red, you're a Red all the way - with your hands full of blood all the way to the grave! Anyone who spouts Communist ideas in USA should have the hardcover copy of Gulag Archepelago slammed down on his head 50 times.
Then let him read it and copy it on the board one hundred times.

Well, Happy Birthday.
I hope you celebrate in grand style. [Maybe even get a new "cordless mouse" for easier navigation among Epinions.]
Cheers!

Dear Cindy,
Thank you for your comment!
In no way would I disagree with your assessment, I only meant to point out that each life is valuable to the person it is taken from and the people who are left behind. No condolences from me could ever replace those killed by Hitler or Stalin (or any other dictator) , just wanted to emphasize the magnitude, which was BIG.
Thank you so much for being a loyal reader.
Sincerely yours,
George

Well-written review, but I disagree with one of your conclusions... (Reply to this comment)

I have also read this book, and I enjoyed it very much. However, without trying to belittle the significance of the terror of the Stalin era, I think there is a huge difference between the treatment of the Jews in Germany and Stalin's campaign against his perceived enemies. At least initially, those who disappeared into the Gulags were targeted for being political dissidents, or members of the intelligentsia who were speaking out against Comrade Stalin. Of course, later, when Stalin's paranoia set in, the parameters of that definition widened considerably. This should be compared to the persecution of the Jews in Nazi Germany, where people who had little or nothing to do with politics(or in many cases, with Judaism itself) were slaughtered , with a set protocol and timetable for doing so.
However, this is a minor point of disagreement, and your review was wonderful, as usual.
