sparkospunky's Full Review: Gurkha Legend Aniversario [1/6] 6 Cigars
I recently received as a gift a Gurkha Lighweight Sampler which contained five cigars packaged, in true Gurkha fashion, in a very colorful, attractive tin. One of the cigars in the sampler was the Gurkha Legend Anniversario, and it was the first one that I selected to smoke out of the tin. I like to write my cigar reviews either while smoking the cigar or soon after finishing, and I'm almost done smoking this one as I write this review.
The Gurkha Legend Anniversario that I'm smoking is the Churchill size, with a length of 7.5 inches and a ring size of 50. It's adorned with a fancy gold, brown and brown label and has an additional silver label towards the foot that denotes it as an Anniversary issue. The cigar is impeccably rolled with an almost seamless oily Connecticut broadleaf maduro wrapper, and it's tightly packed with Dominican filler that has been aged for eight years. This is a good looking stick that simply oozes quality and fantastic eye appeal.
This cigar lights very easily, and it didn't take me long to establish a nice slow, even burn. The draw was almost perfect, neither too easy and breezy nor so difficult that my cheeks sunk in and my eyes bulged. I was able to develop about an inch and a half of almost snow white ash before it dropped off into my ashtray. The Gurkha Legend Anniversario was a very cool smoke and didn't get hot as I approached the end of the smoke.
The flavor and aroma of the Gurkha Legend Anniversario were complex, and it was one of those rare cigars that smelled exactly like it tasted. I detected hints of raspberries at the beginning of the smoke, and later picked up strong notes of licorice. Pepper and earthiness soon entered the picture, and the cigar had a nice peppery note that led to a spicy finish. All of these flavors could be detected in the aroma of the cigar too, which made it a real treat to experience. I got about 1 and 1/2 hours of pure pleasure out of this stick, and was very happy to have had the chance to smoke it.
The overall taste texture of the Gurkha Legend Anniversario was rather dry, which tells me it might pair up well with a good, dry white wine, well chilled of course.
As I said before, this cigar was part of a sampler that was given to me, but a visit to a website or two revealed that it's about a $9 cigar. That's a tad rich for my tastes, but I may spring for one from time to time. It was really a good smoking experience.
