| GravityGirl's Full Review: Halo Innovations Newborn and Infant Sleepsack Wear... |
I first found out about the Halo Sleep Sacks from my baby board when I was pregnant, so I added some of them to my baby registry and I received several of them as gifts. Unfortunately, the small size is intended for infants who are 10-16 pounds. Fortunately, I also received the Halo Sleep Sack Gift set, which includes two sleep sacks- one small and one in newborn size- intended for a baby who is between 5-10 pounds.
Whats up with this sleep sack thing
A sleep sack is a blanket that babies can wear. Parents are advised against putting conventional blankets on babies because of the risk of accidental suffocation. But without blankets, babies can get cold.
The Halo sleep sack is an ingenious invention that looks like a cross between a tank top and a sleeping bag. It is a one piece garment with tank top style sleeves for the babys arms to fit through and a closed bottom to keep the baby warm at night.
Sleep sacks come in a variety of fabrics- fleece, cotton, and luxurious velboa. It is nice to be able to change fabrics as the weather gets warmer or colder and still have a Halo brand product.
The best part is that the sleep sack zips from the top to the bottom. This allows for easier access for diaper changes, making late night diaper duty a minimally invasive experience.
Personal Experiences
Although our baby did not seem to mind being swaddled in the hospital, as soon as we brought her home, she began to resist the dreaded swaddle. This little Houdini would regularly escaped from her Kidapotamus Velcro swaddling blanket. Our strong little girl would do whatever it took to free her hands so that she could suck on them. She also did not like that she could not kick her feet.
The sleep sack is a great article of clothing for her. Her arms are free, so she can suck on her hands and her feet are free as well within the sleep sack, so she can kick them and move them around. Her body is confined to the sleep sack, but it is open and roomy inside the sack, so she is not restricted. I have noticed that she will sleep for a longer time when she is wearing a sleep sack.
The Gift Set
The gift set is the only way to get the newborn sized sleep sack. I have tried the larger size on the baby to see how it fits and it is still way too loose for her. We were able to have her in a long sleeved kimono-style undershirt, a long sleeved footed romper and then put the sleep sack over that.
The gift set comes in a rectangular box with a clear plastic lid and a decorative ribbon. The two sacks are arranged side by side and folded nicely. You have your choice of three different color combinations: yellow/blue, yellow/pink, and white/green.
The one downside is that the gift set is only available in fleece. This is not a problem if your baby is born in January, but if your baby is born in warmer months, you are probably not going to get a lot of use out of the newborn sized sack. We have already started putting the baby in a Gerber brand terry cloth sack at night. Because it does not have the reversible zipper, it is not nearly as convenient as the Halo sack, but it is much more lightweight.
The sacks in the gift set are machine washable. The fleece material is 100% polyester and the label says "machine wash warm, gentle cycle, no bleach, tumble dry low, do not dry clean, do not iron, wash dark colors separately".
Theoretically, the sleep sack does not need to be washed every day- it is more like a blanket than a pair of pajamas and the baby is always wearing something under the sleep sack. We tend to wash the sleep sack every couple of days, unless the baby's pajamas are wet, in which case, the sleep sack gets washed. When washing the sack, we have followed the instructions on the label. We use Dreft detergent and we add a scoop of Oxi Clean Baby to the water. So far, the sack has retained its fluffy softness and there has not been any shrinkage. Although we have not had many experiences with this garment getting stained (there was only one incident that I can think of), upon putting the garment in the washing machine, any stains came out.
I highly recommend the Halo Sleep Sack Gift set to anyone who has a baby or is looking to buy a baby gift for someone. The sacks themselves are soft; they are very comfy and they keep our baby cozy at night. The reversible zipper is very nice; it makes diaper changes easier and it keeps the zipper away from the babys mouth. Plus, using a sleep sack is a safe alternative to blankets.
The gift set is available at Babies R Us, and expectant mothers should absolutely add this gift set to their registries!
