Pros: Great taste, versatile
Most vinegars sold for consumer use have 5% acidity and HEINZ CIDER VINEGAR is no different. Cider vinegar sets itself apart from white wine vinegar or red wine vinegar because it isn't made from grapes, it's made from apples.
It has a mellow fruit flavor, a fruity odor and an amber color. Cider vinegar is an all-purpose vinegar used in general cooking, salad dressings, marinades, and pickling.
HEINZ IS A HOUSEHOLD NAME SINCE 1869
HEINZ is a household name, in my world mostly known for ketchup but also baked beans and various other condiments. HEINZ baked vegetarian beans were a staple in my house when I was a kid as was HEINZ CIDER VINEGAR and HEINZ ketchup. These products are in my pantry too. The apple doesn't fall far from the tree. Pun intended.
Today, the variety of vinegars on the market is staggering. Some of my favorites are Raspberry vinegar, red wine vinegar with pomegranate, Tarragon vinegar, not to mention Balsamic vinegar. Still, HEINZ CIDER VINEGAR has a place next to these favorites.
I tend to use cider vinegar less than red wine or white wine vinegar but there are certain recipes that are more suited for cider vinegar and that's when I reach for HEINZ CIDER VINEGAR.
POTATOES AND CABBAGE
Recipes for potato salad usually call for cider vinegar, especially hot German potato salad. Cabbage and coleslaw recipes also use cider vinegar.
I recently used HEINZ CIDER VINEGAR for making a pineapple vinegar. I learned how to make this vinegar watching the Daisy Cooks! program on PBS. You need a fresh pineapple to start and then slice off the outer skin and boil it for 30 minutes. Add 10 garlic cloves to a jar, onions, jalapeños, peppercorns, 2 tablespoons HEINZ CIDER VINEGAR, and an herb of your choice. I added Rosemary. Then when the pineapple water cools a little, pour it into the jar over the onions, herbs, and spices. The longer it sits, the better it gets. Mine is about 3 weeks in the fridge now.
I poured some of it into a cup of homemade navy bean soup. It was a delicious, flavorful addition. This pineapple vinegar can be drizzled on fish, fries, or on any food where you would use ketchup according to Daisy. I normally wouldn't put ketchup in soup, but this pineapple vinegar is addictive! I also made a second batch with another pineapple again using HEINZ CIDER VINEGAR and this time for herbs used dill and celery seed. I poured some on my turkey burger tonight and it was so delicious that I want another one! I put the burger on my homemade English muffin with a tomato from my garden. Oh YUM! You have to try it!
