So good and so fattening. Expensive at full price but a real taste treat.

Pros: Very tasty, a little piece is enough, three varieties, moist and fresh
Cons: Expensive, high in calories and fat, only made around the holidays
The Bottom Line: I don't even like traditional fruit cake but I can't keep my fork out of these!

| PattyTherre's Full Review: HICKORY FARMS Fruit Cake Trio Cakes |
I have never been a fan of fruit cake but Hickory Farm's website has a huge 75% off everything sale going on so I bought one of, well, almost everything. My husband likes fruit cake so I knew it wouldn't go to waste and it sure isn't. This stuff is addictive!
About Hickory Farms Fruit Cake Trio
This trio of fruitcakes comes boxes and wrapped separately. You get a loaf of Golden, Amaretto, and Pineapple Macadamia. The Golden is covered in walnuts, the Amaretto is smothered in almonds, and the Pineapple Macadamia is exactly as it says, filled with pineapple and big chunks of nuts.
Each cake weighs a pound (but feels way heavier). A serving is one fourth of a cake and they're killer with between 360-470 calories per piece and between 11 and 18 grams of fat. Yikes. A lot of the fat is from the nuts but still, painfully fattening stuff.
These cakes refrigerate well and last quite a long time but, in a household that likes fruit cake, they won't last long.
My Experience
Because these cakes were on sale for just $8.75 for all three and I had a 15% off coupon on top of that, I didn't hesitate to buy them for my husband. They are normally $35.00 per box of three and I WOULD hesitate at that price.
The Hickory Farms Fruit Cake Trio comes in a festive red box. Inside, the three rectangular loaves are wrapped in clear plastic with the ingredients and nutrition info on the back of each loaf.
The first we tried was the Original, or Golden, fruit cake. This one was covered in walnuts and had the traditional maraschino cherry on it. It was amazing. It tasted nothing like the fruit cake I remembered from days gone by that was dry and filled with weird bits of gummy fruity junk. The Pineapple Macadamia cake didn't even taste like a fruit cake. It was dense and filled with sweet, delicious pineapple chunks and big chunks of nuts. Very tasty. Lastly, we tried the Amaretto cake. I am not a fan of Amaretto but this cake was tasty! It was filled with slivered almonds and had a sweet but not overbearing taste. It wasn't my favorite of the three but I certainly didn't NOT like it.
The issue with these fruit cakes is, obviously, that they are very high in calories and fat. The Pineapple Macadamia is the lowest on both, which I find weird since Macadamia nuts are really high in fat. At between 360 to 470 calories per piece, you will want to go easy. A fourth of a cake is a huge amount to eat in one sitting unless you have a very big appetite. I would say half of that should satisfy anyone's sweet tooth.
I only had two to three forkfuls of each one at different times and that was plenty. These cakes are so dense and heavy that any more would make me feel stuffed.
Hickory Farms Fruit Cake Trio are really good. Forget the cheap, dry, gummy fruit cakes in the grocery store and pick up some of these quality fruit cakes. At $8.75 now (the whole site is 75% off as I write this but selling out fast), you can't go wrong. I don't think I would pay $35.00 for these because, as good as they are, they're not THAT good. But I would pay $20.00-$22.00 for the three loaves.
Buying Info
Obviously, Hickory Farms Fruit Cake Trio come from Hickory Farms stores. You can buy them online (but they are soon going to be gone until next year) or at their stores. They're only made around the holidays and are a real favorite of many people I know - and they pay full price for the trio! $35.00 is a bit rich for my blood but, still, delish nonetheless.
Conclusion
Hickory Farms Fruit Cake Trio are moist, tasty, and fattening! These fruit cakes don't even really taste like traditional fruit cakes to me. They taste like very rich, dense cakes with tons of nuts, fruits, and sweetness. They're not sickeningly sweet but they will give you a sugar jolt! I definitely wouldn't sit down to a fourth of a pound of these cakes as a serving. I would burst. I think they're best eaten in small pieces, perhaps a slice an inch to an inch and a half wide. That will leave you satisfied but not stuffed. these are REALLY good and really expensive! 4 stars. One star off for not even trying to cut calories or fat and for being too expensive when full priced.
