CreamChief's Full Review: Hewlett Packard LaserJet 4600dn Printer
UPDATED - I was terribly fooled by this printer at first. It is terrible! Do not buy it!
Okay, so regular laser printers have come down in price also, but we spent about the same amount of money for a decent black and white office printer about a year ago. Now, for $2300, we have an office printer that prints color as well.
The color it prints, however, is not remotely like what is on your screen. Brown is bright yellow, purple is pink, there are new shades of green and blue that don't really exist. You can spend hours trying to adjust the color and get nowhere. The ICC color profiles for both RGB and CMYK don't make a lick of difference. Everything prints far too bright. The settings on the printer itself don't allow for any adjustment to color besides a density setting that does nothing.
This is actually the second one since the first was defective right out of the box! The very first printout showed horizontal banding across all of the color prints. The Hewlett-Packard warranty service guy told me that it was probably a problem with the consumables - so, replace them and try that. I explained that I should not have to spend several hundred dollars to replace the consumables on a brand new printer. He agreed but had no solutions for me. So, our local distributor ordered a new one for us, and we RMA'd the first one.
It just seemed like a very inefficient and stupid way to fix the problem. Why couldn't HP's warranty service just send new consumables to try to fix the problem?
Pros
Fast - I am not going to regurgitate the specifications from the box or the HP web site, but tell you about the real world experience instead. This things spits out black and white pages faster than our 4050n. It spits out pages with color just as fast. The only time it slows down is to process a large color image before printing.
For example, sending a 50MB image to print took somewhere between 5 and 10 minutes to process. The actual printout, however, was only a second or two.
Setting up the printer on the network is as easy as setting up any other networked HP printer. We have it setup in a Novell print queue without any problems. Driver installation is simple and straightforward.
The image quality for color printing depends greatly upon the original image. Where you might previously get away with printing a lower resolution graphic on another printer, if you do not start with a huge, high-resolution graphic, then you will see pixelation on this printer.
There are two paper trays. One, however, is a flip out tray for occasional use paper.
Even fixing a nasty paper jam and "gunk up" from a transparency was fairly easy. We used to spend countless hours cleaning the old Tektronix color printer. This HP just handles the messes much, much better.
Cons
Expensive toner - to replace all four you will need to drop about 8 bills!
It is heavy and takes up much more space than other office printers.
And, of course, there was that strangeness with getting the first, defective printer replaced.
Overall . . .
Buy a better Tektronix for the same price.
