| opinionated3's Full Review: Hewlett Packard LaserJet 8550 Printer |
If you have read any of my other opinions on the subject of printers, you will find that I am a computer service technician/sales representative. In my line of job I work work very close with a wide range of printers. I came across this printer a couple of months ago, and I also did some research on it. I found by watching it print some jobs, that I was really impressed with it's speed and also it's print quality.
Since I have been working on laser printers for several years, if asked I would recommend HP every time. In my opinion they make the most reliable laser printers.
Now for the review on this specific HP laser printer. The quality of the prints that come out of this printer are second to none. The black and white text is so crisp and the colors are so bright. The speed is also amazing, it prints 24 pages per minute in black and white and 6 pages per minute in color.
Laser printers are classified by their workload capability, you either have a personal use laser printer or a work group laser printer or a departmental laser printer. A personal use laser printer is designed to print a small number of pages per day. A work group laser printer is designed to be shared by a small group of individual work stations. It is also designed to handle larger files and place them into a buffer so another work station can use the printer. Departmental laser is designed to used by a larger group of people in different area's.
HP has placed a large amount of memory in this printer so it can handle larger files and it also has a 2GB hard drive for storing fonts and also it will hold electronic forms so the operator doesn't have to load different types of paper to print out special forms. The HP 8550 comes standard with 32 mb's of memory and a capacity of 512, memory is increased my adding memory chips.
What I really like about this printer is it's versatility, it will print standard paper 81/2 x 11 letter size, 81/2 x 14 legal size as well as envelopes. The other feature of the printer is it can print on a larger format paper, this is 11x17 which makes it perfect for graphic artist's and other companies that use CAD programs. Most laser printers will only print on paper that is 81/2 inches wide.
I hope no one minds, but now I am going to discuss a little bit of the technical features of this printer. This is a factor that is often over looked by companies when researching a printer purchase. Laser printers are assigned a duty cycle by the manufacturer, this means this printer will be able to print this many pages per month without causing any undo wear on it, and then causing the printer to need to be repaired. A laser printer uses a series of rubber rollers to move the paper throughout the printer, and as the paper moves through the printer, these rubber rollers will collect paper dust and build up on the rollers and start to wear the rubber away. If you over load the printer(exceed it's duty cycle) the rollers will wear out to fast, and it will start causing paper jams and down time.
The other thing I want to discuss is the way this printer generates the print on the page. There is 4 color toner cartridges in this printer; cyan, magenta, yellow and black. This printer uses a image drum which draws the color toner out of the cartridges and creates the image. These items are considered consumable and must be replaced after a certain number of images. The color toner is changed more often the black (8,500 images and 17,000 respectively) and the imaging drum will need to be replaced after about 12,000 pages for color and 50,000 for black images.
The last thing I want to discuss is how this printer is connected to your computer. This specific model is designed to be connect to a stand alone PC by use of a parallel cable. There is a optional internal print server that can be installed so it would be able to be connected to a network.
In conclusion, I would recommend this printer to a business that is looking for a work horse printer with superior print quality and that the price tag with not deter them from buying this great printer.
