| HyPeR's Full Review: Hewlett Packard LaserJet 8550 Printer |
We purchased this printer at work after some research because we needed two things. First of all we needed a replacement for our general old black and white printer that was on it's last legs. This was a shared printer between a working group of around 10 programmers and graphic artists.
Secondly, since we were replacing it anyway, we thought that it would be good to get a color laser, so that the graphics artists could print off alot of their work directly, instead of having to 'ship out' small jobs. Do you really have to go to a print shop when you only need 10 11x17 posters for the walls in the office?
We have not been disappointed, the print quality on this machine is great at 600dpi, fine for anything that we have been throwing at it. It has large amounts of internal RAM and it's own Hard Drive to buffer up jobs sent to it, relieving your own computer from the pain of waiting for the printer to free up. Plus, with the network card hookup for HP JetDirect, it is a standalone print server, not needing a computer to play scheduler for it!
One problem though, that we have found a bit annoying. While it does have 24 pages per minute black & white printing, and 6 pages per minute in color, there are a few 'slowdown' issues. The small one is that there is a 30 second wait for the black & white printing to begin, and a 1 minute wait for the color to start. So printing out 6 pages of color takes 2 minutes.
Also, this printer takes 'forever' to warm up. It goes into sleep mode at a specified time period of no use (which is configurable), and when it receives the next print job, it starts warming up, and recalibrating itself. This process takes 15 minutes or more. Very annoying when you just wanted to quickly print something and run to a meeting. We at my office have 'dealt' with the problem by setting the timeout up to 3 hours. But still, especially around lunch, it can sometimes go into sleep mode, and the next person who prints is in for a bit of a wait!
