Last fall I upgraded from my (don't laugh) AST 166mhz Pentium to the HP 8580C. Needless to say, the increase in power and speed has been very impressive!
I bought this machine at Best Buy because of the service warranty and because of a special no-interest until 2001 financing offer. Given that one of the other Epinions reported problems with the power supply and hard drives on these machines, the option of local service might be well worth spending some extra bucks. But I have had NO problems at all with this machine, and it has been running 12-16 hours a day since last November. I find it extremely easy to use and reliable.
The HP 8580C has some nice features, especially the CD-Writer Plus drive and DVD drive. I added a Zip drive and a slightly larger monitor than the one that comes with the package, but aside from that this machine had everything I needed and then some for web surfing and work applications. An added plus: the tower is easy on the eyes, with a tinted plastic panel to keep dust out of the drives, and also a compartment on top where you can store CDs.
Setup was a breeze. There's really no reason not to go for this machine if you can get a good deal on it locally.
