As a professional IT Consultant - I have been a diehard Epson printer fan from way back. The first printer that I ever purchased was an Epson FX185 back in 1983 and when color inkjets came out I purchased the Epson Color Stylus and then the Pro version. All great printers.
Recently I had a customer who needed a color duplex printer but couldn't afford the price of even a low-end color laser printer. Doing some research I found the HP DeskJet 970Cxi, seeing that it had good reviews and a reasonable price I showed it as an option to this client. She liked what she saw and so I ordered and installed the printer - and boy was I IMPRESSED with it!!
The printer installed extremely easy and a 'novice' with computers should have no problems installing it and configuring it. Setting up the duplexing unit was also a breeze. From out of box to printing a demo duplex page was like 10 minutes.
The printer was fast, quiet, with excellent color and B&W resolution and the duplexing worked like a charm.
After seeing how well it worked I ended up purchasing one for my office and now, after using it for several months, I have not regretted it for a minute. Heck - I'm still impressed as hell with it and recommend it to all my clients looking for color duplex printer on a light to medium scale of workload.
The HP 970Cxi comes with both IEEE 1284-compliant Centronics parallel and USB connections, so hooking it up is no problem. It is compatible with Win9X, Win2K and MacOS, has a high print speed rating for both color and B&W (10ppm and 12ppm respectfully), a good duty cycle, handles a variety of paper very well, outstanding resolution and a reasonably small footprint for a printer with it’s capabilities.
If you need Color Printing with a Duplex function that is fast, clear and quiet and either can not afford, don't need or just want to stay away from those big, expansive color laser printers - then this is the perfect choice for you! If you want the quality of the 970C series but have no need for duplexing - then check out any of the HP Desk Jet 900 series printers. They are all in about the same class overall but you can save a bit of money no getting the duplexing unit.
