marie13's Full Review: Hewlett Packard DeskJet 940c InkJet Printer
I've had the HP Deskjet 940c for about 16 months, and I've found it to be a pretty good printer. At around $125 the price was very good for when I bought it.
It's print speed is pretty fast, especially if you set the quality at normal, or even draft, as opposed to best. I don't think there's a huge difference in quality between settings, but the speed difference is big.
In 16 months or so I haven't had any real problems with it. Nothing on it has broken, even though I get a lot of use out of it.
I found the printer easy to set up, despite the lack of directions. It's not a very fancy printer, so there it's pretty self-explanatory. There aren't many bells and whistles to confuse the user.
The printer does tend to eat through ink, and the cartridges are pretty expensive, of course. The cartridges are around $30-35 each. The ink in the color cartridge just seemed to disappear. I didn't print anything in color for a 3 month span, but the ink level of the color cartridge (as reported by the printer) just kept on gradually going down from 60% to 20%.
I tried refilling the cartridges with a refill kit and found that it works well. Even though the printer and cartridge makers say that refilling doesn't work or lowers the quality, my refilled cartridges are working as good as new.
I also wish that the paper tray held more paper. It seems like I always need to refill it. I would love it if the printer would hold a ream of paper, but it's not a huge inconvience.
I have had some problems with the paper feed. I've never had a problem when using it to print on one side of the page. However, when I had a class that required me to print out long reading assignments on a regular basis I tried printing on both sides of the page to save paper. When I would put the paper back in to be printed on the second side, pages would frequently stick together and jam. This printer is good for everyday use, but it's not meant to handle heavy duty printing.
