clocks's Full Review: Hewlett Packard LaserJet 8000 Printer
Concurring with the size of our network, we are currently running 8 or 9 of these HPLJ8000 printers simultaneously in addition to another 4 or 5 8100s, an 8100, and innumerous local printers. In the course of the two years i have worked with this network, we have only had 1 problem with a LaserJet 8000 and that was actually the fault of the duplex option that one of our assistants had installed wrong.
Reliability
Hewlett Packard has spent a great deal of time and money on this printer's design in order that it may not be plagued by some of the reliability and service problems that hurt early printers. (though for a couple grand a pop, they'd better) Besides the extremely little time it takes to actually set this thing up, we spend virtually no time servicing these because they almost never "break" and when they do, the on-board buttons and LCD display allow us to diagnose the problem only minutes after stepping in the room. You just click over on a menu, press the print button, and off goes the laser inscription of the current configuration settings, IP address, hardware address, and toner status all in two pages. One of the other nice things about servicing this printer is that you can directly access the variables that affect the printer from the LCD display (NewTonerCartridge=no, PrintQuality=High, etc).
In addition to the actual printing features that keep this printer going problem free, HP has streamlined the toner installation so that i can teach departmental employees how to do it in minutes and feel confident that they wont mess anything up or break the toner.
Superb technical support and technicians make this a favorite of many professional environments. If you have problems that cant be solved easily over the phone, HP has no problem with sending out a live technician to you so that you will know that thier service is the best and that you will want to buy another HP product.
Flexibility
The nice thing about this printer is that its good enough to serve as an enterprise class printer but is also compact enough and cost effective to work as a large workgroup printer for some of your buisier employees. Because of its oustanding toner economy (we get about 20K to 30K pages per cartrige) and the huge paper capacities (1000 pages among 2 trays, with an option you can buy to add extra trays) that this printer offers, this printer can save your staff hours of time, effort and annoyance that would otherwise be spent fighting with the copying machine. Some accessories, as explained below, allow for collating, stapling, binding, duplexing, paper feeding, and other menial tasks that would otherwise be done by copier or by hand.
Expandability
The accessories and support availible for this printer are incredible. Duplexing options, extendible paper trays, high capacity toners, along with many other customized options offer a class of flexibility and utility that not many printer companies can even hold a candle to. Hp has properly engineered each "option" component with ease of installation in thier mind. It is quite obvious, in fact, that they actually had people in thier company test how easy it is to install the options rather than accepting a theoretical design without checking it in the real world.
Service
HP has been very prompt and courteous the one time that we have had to call them out to our site for a computer problem. In addition to telephone support, they kept in contact by email and checked up on the status of our printer long after the service was performed. To be completely honest, I am impressed by HP's service team and I feel that they have done thier job properly, intellegently, and efficiently. The only problem I have found thus far with thier service and support is that it takes them a little while to get back to me when I just email them.
Overall
I could recommend this printer with clear concience to anyone who wants to find out about work printers for thier staff. It is safe, reliable, cost-effective, and comes with downright awesome technical support. Because of its relatively high price tag, however, i would have to say that small buisnesses will not need such a monster unless they really turn out a heck of a lot of pages per day.
