| jeremy1981's Full Review: Hewlett Packard Photosmart 100 InkJet Printer |
I first saw the HP Photosmart 100 on TechTV's the Screensavers. I loved the idea that it has the ability to read and print directly from Memory Stick, Compact Flash and Smart media Cards without a computer. I also have a Kodak PPM 200 Photo printer that has basically the same functionality as this printer but has terrible print speeds and no memory stick slot. I have to say that I am much happier with the speed and print quality of the HP.
The HP Premium Glossy Photo Paper cost around 19.99 for 60 sheets. I have also tried 4x6 sheets by RoyalBrites that cost a little over 10 dollars for 50 sheets and give about the same picture quality as HP's paper. The ink cartridges cost around 30 dollars which isn’t really that bad considering there is only one to buy. You can purchase a carrying bag from HP for around $35.00. It will hold extra paper and ink cartridges.
Ease of Use
The Photosmart 100 is very easy to use. All you have to do is slide in your cameras memory card and select which photos you wish to print using the built-in lcd and press the print button. Please note that the LCD does not display the picture you must select which number you wish to print. Alternatively, you have the ability to print an index card of all the photos on the memory card so that you may select which pictures you wish to print. You also have the ability to use the DPOF or Digital Print Order Format on your camera. Most digital cameras are equipped with this feature these days. It gives you the ability to pick which pictures you wish to print on your camera then when you insert the card into the printer it will detect these pictures and print them at your command. You can usually find this option in your digital cameras playback menu. You can also hook the printer to your computers USB port for printing directly from the computer. The factory included software is very quick and easy to use. Simply load or drag and drop your pictures into the program and select which size of paper you are using and print.
Print Quality & Speed
The quality of the pictures printed using HP's Premium Photo Quality Glossy paper is very good. It is hard to tell that they are from an inkjet unless looking very closely. It would probably be impossible to tell if you have bad eyesight. It takes less than 2 minutes to print a 4x6. I can't comment on how long it takes to print a 3.5x5 or a wallet since I have yet to print either of those sizes.
Memory Slots
Not only does this printer give you the ability to print directly from your Compact Flash, SmartMedia or Memory Stick, it also gives the added value of being a USB card reader. When hooked up to your computers USB port and a memory card is inserted you have the ability to view the memory card as an additional drive on your computer. It does take a little longer to transfer pictures using the card readers than when transferring pics directly from my Sony Cybershot.
The only trouble I have had with the printer is with the paper feeder/tray. If you don't get the paper lined up in the tray it will sometimes print the picture out of line on the paper. Otherwise, I am very happy with my purchase. It is very convenient easy to use especially considering its size and portability. The picture quality is excellent. Every picture I have printed has come out vibrant and true to life.. I would recommend this to anyone with a digital camera!
