Hewlett Packard has provided a line of Photosmart printers that can print your digital photos without the use of your computer.
The HP Photosmart 1315 is the first one to have a color LCD display so you can view your photos. The other Photosmart models all have a monochrome LCD display that only displays information about the photos while the 1315 gives you a 2.5-inch color LCD to view each Photo with.
Viewing the Photos!
The HP Photosmart 1315 has built in it three slots for viewing your photos. In one slot you can put in your SmartMedia card, another slot holds CompactFlash Type I & Type II and the third slot holds a Sony Memory Stick. You can also use a Microdrive with an adapter.
So now just pull out which one of the three your camera has, plug it into the proper slot on the Photosmart 1315 printer and you are now ready to view and print your photos.
You can also have the printer upload your photos to your computer if you are connected to it.
Connections!
There are three connections that can be made.
1. Parallel is used for those who own a PC and wish to connect it with a parallel cable.
2. USB is for PC and Mac owners for an easier connection and faster photo upload time.
3. Infrared is for wireless transmissions from any source that can transmit infrared like some cameras and Palms.
Printing Speeds
The speed that any printer prints depend on how much it has to print on the amount of graphics and or text. These are just the manufactures ratings.
The Best quality printing is done on photo paper at 2400 x 1200 dpi. (Dots Per Inch)
The HP Photosmart 1315 has drop-on-demand thermal inkjet print head nozzles with 300 nozzles for the black and 408 for the color. (136 nozzles per color)
Black & White Printing (TEXT)
In the Draft mode it is rated at 17 pages per minute.
In the Normal mode it is rated at 6.5 pages per minute.
In the Best mode it is rated at 1.3 pages per minute.
Color Printing (GRAPHICS)
In the Draft mode it is rated at 13 pages per minute.
In the Normal mode it is rated at 5 pages per minute.
In the Best mode it is rated at 1.2 pages per minute.
In my tests it printed an 8 x 10 inch color photo in the Normal mode in around 4 minutes, my Photosmart 1215 prints the same photo in around 5 minutes. In the Best mode it will take a few minutes longer.

Overall
I have the HP Photosmart 1215 and love the quality and performance of the printer, my sister-in-law also feel in love with my 1215. My sister-in-law ended up with the 1315 because she wanted to print her digital photos in another room without the use of the computer.
Speed and Performance difference between the HP 1215 and HP 1315 is hardly noticeable unless you are sitting there with a stop watch timing the results. Photo quality is excellent for both printers.
Being able to view the photos directly on the printer is nice but it is like looking on your LCD on your digital camera, it is still too small for proper viewing. So viewing your photos on a computer screen is still the best way to see the quality of your photos.
The Photosmart 1315 sells at most places for around $399, I know this is a little high but the cost of the color LCD and the third slot for a Sony Memory Stick will bring the cost up. The 1215 sells for around $299, so you be the judge if the extra features are worth the cost.
My final conclusion is that the Photosmart P1000, 1215 and 1315 all give you an excellent photo on photo paper.
My sister-in-law loves her HP Photosmart 1315 color printer!
