Pros: Handles a good amount of tank gunk
Cons: Plastic parts may not stand up to rough handling.
The Bottom Line: I recommend this for all size tanks. It is a hard working and efficient filter.

| protoguy's Full Review: Hagen AquaClear Power Filter |
The Aqua Clear filter has a few different systems to choose from depending on the size of your tank. If you don't like to clean the tank very often, get a filter a bit larger than the one recommended. You can also use two filters for larger tanks.
My girlfriend has a very large Cichlid in a 55 gallon tank and it keeps the water crystal clean. She has two filters for it. There is a plecostomus in the tank helping out with the algae too.
In her other tank, which is a 39 gallon tank, she has three silver dollars and some catfish, the same filter (a 300) has been in place for about six years. on the ciclid's tank there is a 500 and a 300. While technically the 300 is big enough, she doesn't like to clean the tanks, and these two filters do most of the work. The filters are definitely up to handling the output of these large fish.
The other advantage to having two filters is that if one breaks, the other is a backup and the fish don't suffer for lack of clean water.
These filters are easy to clean too. You just pull out the basket and rinse out the gunk and put it back. It comes apart easily for when you want to thoroughly clean the unit. She does that every 2 - 3 months.
Undergravel filters are okay, but they do not clean out the dirt like Aqua Clear. It stays in the tank and if you have a large fish, it may move it and release the toxins and poison it.
The filter has a large sponge to filter and trap bacteria and a charcoal bag for cleaning the water. DO not clean with chlorinated water. This will destroy essential bacteria. Install a water filter on a sink and you can use that water to clean out the unit. Make sure that the filter you install does not clean out all the bacteria itself too.
Aqua Clear makes filters for all tank sizes and uses. Prices range from $15 to $40.
