| btwitch's Full Review: Hagen AquaClear Power Filter |
The Aqua Clear Power filter brought to us by our good friends a Hagen, is quite possibly the greatest power filter ever. Every aspect of it is a plus.
The hang on the back filter provides tons of space for filling it with your choice of filter media. Hagen, who also makes the Fluval canister filters for much more money, needs to stop making them. Granted they are powerful efficient filters, but compared to the Aqua Clears, they are junk.
The Aqua Clears media basket is completely open where you can fill it, like I said earlier, your choice of media. So many other power filters that will remain nameless, (WHISPER) allow you only to put in a filter pad. That’s it. Well, that’s fine except for when it’s time to change it. You see, a fish tank needs biological filtration as well as mechanical filtration.
Mechanical filtration is the actual removal of fish waste, extra food, ect. from the fish tank and trapping it in the filter pad. Yes that is important but some filters offer only that.
Biological filtration is done by beneficial bacteria that multiply on just about any surface over time and help[ break down the fish waste, extra food, and also keep the nitrates, nitrites, and ammonia all in check in the water.
The Aqua Clear allows you room to put in products such as Bio-Balls or Biochem Beads, made by Aquarium Pharmaceuticals, which you can put in over the foam pad and never have to rinse off, thus never killing the bacteria that keeps you tank in check.
Most people when shopping for a filter want the one that will make taking care of their tank the easiest. Well, this is it. The Aqua Clear is VERY easy to clean, is very quiet, and keeps your fish tank water looking crystal clear.
One quick note, there is no such thing as too much filtration. If you can afford it, buy the next size up than what is recommended on the box. I have an Aqua Clear 300 running on a 20 gallon tank at it’s lowest setting. I do this because i can put in more filtration media and thus clean less often. There is no such thing as too much filtration but there is too much current, thus having it on the lowest setting. Also provide plenty of shelter for your fish to get out of the current if they want.
This filter is worth every penny. Quiet, economical, better than any canister filter at at least 1/3 the cost. Buy this and you will NOT be disappointed.
