| jnoschese's Full Review: Hagen Fluval 104404 |
I moved into a new apartment, and had a perfect spot for a "dream fish tank" I've seen. Before moving here, I had a 35 gallon freshwater tank for about a year or so, but wanted to start a saltwater tank, so I wound up buying a 92 gallon Corner Tank. The pet store recommended a few items, and I was always eyeing the Fluval Cannister series filters because they just look like good pieces of equipment. The Pet Shop wound up recommending to me a Fluval 204 along with a Sump which should be enough filtration for my 92 gallon tank.
Getting everything setup except for the Sump (I ran into problems), I let the Fluval 204 run for about 2 weeks to get my cycle started. I went out and bought an eel to get the cycle started. He's still alive (a month and a half later) and with still no sump added. I don't want to dare add more fish to the tank until I can get the sump added, but for a filter that recommended by the manufacturer for approximately 40 gallons is pretty good in my book!
The installation of the Fluval was quiet difficult actually. The instructions weren't very clear. It took me a little while to understand how the instructions work, but once you get the hang of it, it was easy. According to some of the other reviews on the 103-403 fluvals, there seemed to be an o-ring issue. The o-ring slipped on fine and I haven't had any leaks at all. The instructions even tell you to "wet" the o-ring to prevent leaking. I was skeptical at first, but after keeping an eye on it for a few hours, I had no fear.
Starting up the Fluval at first was somewhat difficult trying to pump the water so it would constantly move. But I figured out the "trick."
All-in-All, I think this is a great filter, its quiet and it can be kept out of site. There is plenty of media that you can store in its 4 chambers for filtering out different things. If you can get past the instruction booklet, your home free.
