| RCarte2000's Full Review: Hagen Kitty Korner Hooded Cat Pan |
I never knew I would enjoy shopping for my cat as much as I do for my child. After being a pet owner for many years, Ive found that my pets are just like my children and have special needs. Thanks to technology, there are many options for these needs an those options require comparisons, reviews, and shopping around for deals and the best products for the buck paid out.
Ive had my cat for approximately 8 months now and he is a dear for the most part. Perhaps my biggest pet peeve with Oreo is that he is a litter slinger. With his litter box in my bathroom, nothing bugs me more than getting up at 3am to potty and feeling the sharp, gritty, icky pieces of litter under my feet (and not knowing if they are clean or used!) Finally, I decided that something had to be done and I recalled my mother having this really neat litter box with a hood and a door on it for our family cat up until she passed away a few years back.
I took a look at a local department store and found a couple of options but didnt really have the extra cash that day, so I passed. A few days and many bathroom litter sweepings later, I found that Petsmart.com was having a huge Christmas sale (because we all know that our pets need visits from Santa, too!) I found a Hagen Kitty Korner Hooded Cat Pan on sale and decided that it was time to make that purchase!
The wonderful package arrived a couple of days ago and the results appeared instantly! A whole day went by without the need to sweep up litter and my 3am potty trip was not as irritating. I was surprised that Oreo took to it so easily, as he is not the type to make adjustments or changes too easily. He knew what it was and what it was for in an instant. What a relief that was.
The Hagen Kitty Korner Cat Pan is approximately 16 high, 18 long, and 15 wide. It is comprised of five main parts:
~The cat pan
~The hood (which latches to the cat pan)
~The door
~The handle
~The filter
The Cat Pan
The cat pan itself is pretty much a basic run of the mill litter pan that you would see in any household with a cat in the family. Nothing spectacular here, really.
The Hood
The hood latches to the cat pan securely so that it doesnt go flying off during the most inopportune times. It removes easily for cleaning.
The Door
As with any door, it provides entrance and exit to the pan. The door is clear so that kitty can see where he/she is going and find his/her way out just as easily. Owner can also see if kitty is occupying the litter box at the time. (Believe it or not, I know of some cats that will not use their box if someone else is around and likewise I know of some cat owners who will not do their business in the bathroom if the cat is in there doing his.) The door is plastic just as the pan and hood are, but it is a little softer, as not to harm kitty during entrance/exit.
The Handle
Perhaps the most convenient feature for the pet owner is the handle. This provides the ease and flexibility of moving the pan around when necessary without actually handling the pan itself. It is a very handy feature indeed.
The Filter
The Hagen Kitty Korner Cat Pan comes complete with its own Odo-Trap cartridge which attaches to the hood of the pan and out of kittys way. It traps odors as well as dust particles stirred up inside the pan, making it healthier and fresher for all involved. This is another convenience of this system.
Liners
Cat pan liners are an option with this pan as well as most any other cat pan on the market. The liner is a thin sheet of plastic contoured to fit around the pan to provide for easy changing. Its like a garbage bag set up, but not as deep as any ordinary garbage bag.
Common sense tells you that unless you have a declawed kitty or one who is extra gentle, cat pan liners are a true waste of money. Kitty claws tend to shred the plastic during use, thus making the liner worthless any way. Do yourself a favor and opt out of the liners if at all possible.
The Cost of Luxury
The set up cost me around $20 and is well worth every penny. It is readily available at most pet suppliers, such as the Petsmart where I obtained mine. I understand that the pan is available in some places in multiple colors, but I had no choice as I ordered it on-line and had it delivered to my home. Ours is a decent shade of blue and has received no complaints from Oreo or myself.
The Results
As stated previously, I have little to no issues with litter spread about the general area of the litter pan. My feet are happy and so are my floors. The mess is minimal and the sanitary level of the area has increased.
Odors are controlled much better with the Kitty Korner Cat Pan than with my old cat pan. The hood keeps scents in and the filter tends to trap them where they belong. Unless the cat pan is severely neglected, the odors should not be a problem any longer. Obviously, if you let it go much longer than you should, you will have odor problems, as with any unsanitary situation.
Oreo seems to enjoy his privacy in his hooded potty wonderland. Personally, I prefer not having a cat sitting there staring at me doing my business while hes doing his. We can each have our privacy and go on with life. Again, another convenience of the product.
I cant think of anything negative to say about this product and thats a good thing. Tired of kitty litter under your feet and between your toes? Tired of obnoxious litter smells? Tired of the kitty with the staring problem? Get a Hagen Kitty Korner Cat Pan and make at least one part of your life a little easier.
