Pros: Long Lasting, high intensity, high Kelvin rating.
Cons: Not enough light to sustain corals or invertebrates.
I am currently using 1 Power-Glo Fluorescent Aquarium Lamp by Hagen for my marine aquarium.
The bulb I am using is a 36 inch tube. It has 30Watts, 1660 Lumens, 135 LUX, and 18,000 Kelvin.
I currently have a fish only tank with live rock; no corals or invertebrates at this time.
This single light strip is not sufficient alone to sustain corals, invertebrates, or other marine life. All forms of marine life other than the fish require much more intense lighting. This can be achieved with many different variations of lighting including additional Power-Glo
strips if you choose to do so. (This depends on the size and depth of your aquarium. Mine being 58 gallons, I would require at least 4 of these light strips for anything other than a fish only tank.)
The Power-Glo works wonderful for a fish only tank. I have been using this single strip for the past 5 months and my fish are happy and healthy. The fish are content and their needs are being met with this single strip lighting.
The Power-Glo does promote Coral, Invertebrate, and Plant growth. As previously stated, this tube contains 18,000 Kelvin which is great for all of the above mentioned life forms. (again depending on the size of your aquarium you will more than likely need more than one of these light strips.) The Power-Glo does provide High Intensity lighting for your tank.
I have not had any problems with my fluorescent lamp. The bulb runs steady and does not get too hot. Since I only have 1 light strip, I do not need to use any fans for cooling. This tube has shown itself to be reliable as it has not burned out. It provides a steady source of light and it provides a fairly good display for the fish.
I am able to see the bright colors of the fish. The color looks clear and sharp under this lighting. I have a healthy growth of algae, but it is not to the point of being out of control. The live rock is doing fine. There has been some new growth, but again I really do need more light strips to help promote the best possible growth for the live rock. It is not bad though with just the single strip at this time.
I would recommend the Power-Glo Fluorescent Lamps for anyone who is just starting out. They are inexpensive and reliable.
(I can't wait to share my opinion on the new compact lighting system I will be getting soon!) Those aquarist out there know what I am talking about!! It will be a bit of an investment, but well worth it.
