timberowl's Full Review: Haier HDT18PA 17 in. Built-in Dishwasher
I bought one of these in March of 2006. I've had it for about 13 months, and it just now stopped working. It's actually worked pretty well for my purposes--I live alone and it can easily accomodate all of the dishes that I've used throughout the day. I can hook it up to the sink during use, then wheel it out of the way during the day. The U-shaped drainage hose is pretty inconvenient, but can be combatted pretty easily by pushing the dishwasher against it during operation to make sure it doesn't move.
One of the worst things about this model is that, although inanimate, it does tend to "freak out" when operation doesn't go smoothly. It makes an obnoxious, loud, immutable beeping sound whenever the smallest thing goes wrong with it. If it takes in too much water and can't drain, it leaks water out the door. That's what it just did to me today when it stopped working; it was having a hard time because the filter was full, so it gave me a warning "BEEEEEEEEEP" and then flooded my entire apartment kitchen with brown dishwater right out the sides of the door. Of course the manual has offered absolutely no help with the troubleshooting. Overall, a great dishwasher, but too many kinks.
Update:
I called WalMart.com, where it was purchased from, and they gave me the number for the manufacturer. Some standard troubleshooting did the trick and my dishwasher is working perfectly again. The troubleshooting involved tilting the dishwasher backwards at a 45-degree angle and letting any excess water drain out. They said ocassionally the water intake will be blocked and this process helps move anything that may have gotten in the way.
Also, I forgot to mention earlier in my initial review, this item has a few different wash options that are usually only found in pricier models. It offers Heavy, Regular, Light, Top Load (where only the wand below the top rack moves...I've never used this feature, because the top rack is significantly smaller than the bottom one and anything I could fit in there I could just as easily do by hand), and Rinse and Hold. It also allows you to delay the start by up to 9 hours, in 1-hour increments. I don't like to use this feature, for a few reasons. One is that the dishwasher will only drain itself if it is on, and it automatically shuts off when it is done with its cycle; so if you have it running while you're away and it stops, you could come home to a flooded kitchen. The other reason is along the same lines; my own experience with the sink adaptor on this dishwasher is that water tends to leak out from the sides of it no matter what the entire time, but less so when the machine is actually taking in water. When the machine shuts off, it stops actively taking in water (some is still going down the hose to it) and water sprays in all directions from the faucet. I don't particularly want that happening while I'm away, so usually I'm there to turn off the water immediately after it ends the cycle.
