Cons: Contraindicated in patients with Peptic ulcer and Bleeding Disorders.
The Bottom Line: I recommend it to everyone above the age 45 in once daily dosage because it reduces the incidence of Heart-attacks and Stroke.

Hello my Friends! It has been a long time since I have written a review. I have been busy fulfilling the requirements to practice medicine in the USA.
Well! Talking about Halfprin you may first want to know why it is called HALF.Halfprin contains half the dosage of what we get in the traditional Aspirin. It is about 162.5mg. This dose is selected so as to minimise the side effects while ensuring that the desired effect is produced.
Contents:Acetyl Salycilic Acid 162.5mg
Mechanism of action: Aspirin in low doses as present in Halfprin inhibits an enzyme called Thromboxane Synthetase thereby reducing the production of Thromboxane A2.There are some cells called Platelets in our blood. You know pretty well that these platelets form a plug and help in clotting of blood. Thromboxane A2 is essential for adhesion of these platelets and thereby formation of Blood clot. As we age our blood vessels become narrow due to deposition of cholesterol plaques on the walls of the vessels [ a process called atherosclerosis]. These plaques may sometimes rupture creating rough edges in the wall of the blood vessel. The platelets adhere to these rough surfaces and forms a plug called Thrombus. This Thrombus occludes the native blood vessel and reduces the flow, thereby reducing the oxygen supply to the target organ such as Heart, Brain. This Thrombus may also fragment producing Emboli which travel to the vessels far off and lodge there. When the thrombi occlude the Coronary blood vessels which carry blood to heart there is an interruption of blood supply to the heart. This is called Ischaemia which then lead to death of the heart tissue called as Myocardial Infarction or The Heart Attack.
In the USA Cardiac disease due to Coronary artery occlusion is the First leading cause of death.
The thrombus as it fragments give rise to emboli which may travel to and lodge in the cerebral blood vessels i.e;the vessels that carry blood to brain. This can lead to STROKE.
Aspirin acts early. It inhibits the production of the substance that is required for Thrombus formation.
Hence the formation of these platelet-plugs is reduced.As a result the occlusion of the vessels carrying blood to our heart and brain can be prevented

-Prevention of Stroke: Aspirin can reduce the recurrence of Stroke by 50%.
Recommendation: Physicians now recommend daily Aspirin in low dose for everyone after the age 40. It is especially recommended for High-risk group:-1]those who have already had a heart attack or stroke. This is to prevent recurrence

Contra-indications: Aspirin should not be used in patients with bleeding disorders eg:Haemophila-A, Von-Willebrands disease as this can produce potentially dangerous bleeding in these persons. Persons having these disease should consult their physician before starting this Over the Counter medicine.
Caution: Aspirin should be used with caution in patients with peptic ulcer disease and gastritis. These patients should consult their physician before starting the medicine
In general I recommend One Halfprin once daily for everyone after the age 45yrs. Remember Coronary Artey Disease is the number one killer in the USA and using Halfprin once daily can reduce the incidence by 50%

I have used Aspirin on number of my patients who had stroke and Heart-attacks. There is an appreciable reduction in the recurrence of the attacks
