Freak369's Full Review: Golden Books - Halloween Coloring Book
Halloween is one of my favorite holidays and every year I am gifted with some awesome things from friends and family members. Last year I received the Halloween Coloring Book from a neighbor, she was a little hesitant about giving it to me because she didnt know how I would react to it. It is a little on the juvenile side and some of the illustrations are a bit hokey but it's still a Halloween themed book that is a lot of fun for younger kids to color in. Unlike some similar titles, this one is 100% scare-free. No axe wielding serial killers, wart riddled witches or spooky monsters. To some people that might be a con but if you have ever had to deal with kids that are a little sensitive about scary things, you will appreciate having something that is 'scare free' for Halloween.
What makes this a great pick for younger kids? The illustrations have a good bit of detail to them but no so much so that they get frustrated trying to color them in. You get the usual assortment of Halloween things like cats, ghosts, pumpkins, trick-or-treaters and flying bats but they are all happy and smiling. There is even one of a vampire but he is waving at you and carrying a trick-or-treat bag with a smiling pumpkin on it. Having a coloring book like this can be a great comfort for younger kids that get scared easily or kids that just aren't sold on the holiday. They get eighty images to color in how ever they like and it lets them see that things dont have to be scary to be fun.
None of the brood have ever been scared of Halloween but we have a few neighbors that go "all out" for the holiday and their kids are a little too young to appreciate the amount of work and 'scare power' the put into decorating. When they came over this year for a pre-Halloween party the kids were both as white as ghosts and I thought that maybe they were starting to get into the Halloween spirit. No, that wasn't the case, their parents had just gotten done hanging skeletons and spider webs and were playing scary songs and special effects. The poor kids looked like they were ready to crack so I grabbed this coloring book and some crayons and let them have at it. They were smiling and laughing when they were coloring and asked if they could take their completed pictures home to hang up in their rooms.
Some of the coolest drawings are the simplest ones; a few grinning pumpkins sitting in a pumpkin patch, a back cat walking on a fence, a bat flying into a barn door, little kids dressed up for trick-or-treating, pumpkins and ghosts outside a pumpkin patch, a duck carrying a treat bag and a lot of cute drawings of common Halloween things. There are only a few text entries on the pages, most of them are simple and easy to read like "Happy Halloween" and "Trick-Or-Treat!". About the only downside to the coloring book is that it is printed on newsprint so you are sort of limited to colored pencils and crayons when coloring them in. If you use markers the ink will bleed through to the backside of the page.
I received this as a gift but the price listed on the back is $2.29 which isnt that bad for a coloring book of this size. It is suggested for kids ages three to seven but because of the simplicity of some of the drawings, younger kids can make use of it with a little help from parents or siblings. The pages are strong and rip out easily but they are not perforated. I would rather pay a little more for a coloring book that is printed on copy bond type paper rather than newsprint so you can see the colors accurately but I can't really argue about this one since it was a gift.
The Bottom Line
This is a great coloring book for kids that are a bit intimidate but other titles that contain scary scenes. Even something as frightening as a zombie is does up nicely in this book; from behind the wraps of the mummy's outfit you can see a big smile as he waves to you. Even though I am someone that loves gore, blood and guts, having this coloring book around for some 'scare free' fun for younger kids is awesome. This is part of a series of seasonal coloring books for the younger crowd; other seasons and holidays include Easter, Christmas, Valentine's Day and Thanksgiving. If you are looking for a coloring book that us truly fun for 'all ages' then this is a great one to keep your eyes peeled for.
