Add Some Fright & Fun To Naked Nails With Dover's Halloween Fingernail Tattoos!
Written: Oct 01 '07
Pros:Easy to apply, ten designs, great for kids, inexpensive.
Cons:Hard to find outside the Dover website, seasonal item.
The Bottom Line: Finally, temporary fingernail tattoos that last more than twelve hours!
The count down has started; 30 more days until Halloween! Being someone that thinks its the coolest holiday around, I am always on the lookout for anything related to the spookiest time of the year. The Dover Publications website is always a great place to look for titles that you might never come across in retail stores. When I saw this one listed I had to order it even if it turned out to be a complete wash. The price on this? A slim dollar fifty; for that price I couldn't pass it up. There are a total of a hundred fingernail tattoos in this book but dont get too excited about it just yet; it's a small book and there are only a total of four pages to it. Even so, this is something that you can have a lot of fun with and if you are in the planning stages of a Halloween party, this is a great thing to get to keep the girls entertained.
Dover Halloween Fingernail Tattoos
So what kind of designs do you get with this book? Well, the nice thing is that there are ten of each of them; I purchased a few other books like this and they had odd numbers of tattoos so that made no sense what so ever. One of the coolest is the cat with green eerie eyes. This looks great if you put it on over neon green polish or a glow in the dark varnish. Another cool one is the sinister purple bat; this one takes a little care when applying because it can get slightly skewed if you aren't careful. The eyeball looks cool if you want something for your toe; that was my initial plan for them until I had that little incident that left me minus one large toe. The spider web image is a little cluttered and can be hard to make out but it is a nice addition to the patterns. I really like the skull and hope to find a nice purple glitter nail polish to put on under this one. Sure it's a little goofy but hey, Halloween comes but once a year.
There are two different pumpkins to choose from; one with a witches hat and one of a rather happy looking pumpkin. The one with the hat is great for people who have smaller nails; when Annabelle wanted to try these out most of them were too big for her fingers but this one fit perfectly on all of them. Of course that meant that I had to order a couple more books from the website since we went through half of the designs goofing around and experimenting. If you are an adult applying these you shouldn't have any problems with the size of them but as I mentioned, if you are applying them to a girls fingernails, there are some that are going to be too large. The eyeball and candy corn are probably ones that we wont use but I am sure that someone at some point in time will make use of them
How do you apply them? It's pretty simple. Pick out the design you want to use, make sure you have the image reversed and press it where you want it on the nail. Use a cotton swab and wipe the back of it with water. Give it a minute to adhere then peel off the backing. This isnt something that you can get done in a couple of minutes so make sure that you have the time to do the job right so you don't end up wasting them. If you want them to last longer than a day or two, apply a clear polish to it. There are some glow in the dark nail polishes that dry clear, these look great if you apply them under and over the darker ones like the cat, cat face or witches hat. When you want to remove them the easiest way is t use a stuff nail brush with some soap and water. If you applied a coating over the tattoo then you will have to use nail polish remover.
You can apply these to things other than fingernails and toenails. If you have anything plastic that you want to decorate you can use the same application method to get them to stick but you will have to use some type of sealer to get it to last more than a few weeks. These are not transfers that you can rub on to something, if you try that you are going to end up ripping the backing sheet and destroying the designs. Yes, that is the voice of experience speaking. I tried to use a barnisher to get the image to transfer to a mirror thinking that these would be awesome to use on to decorate things and eventually use for crafts. The end result wasn't pretty but I learned a valuable lesson.
The Bottom Line
I really wish that more of the Dover books were sold in retail stores. Not only are they a great value but they seem to have a never ending selection of titles, themes and subjects. This was a great purchase and I ordered five more of them to have on hand for parties and for Annabelle to take with her when she has her ballet parties around the holiday. They are completely safe to apply and wear and outside of having to cut them out, these are something that kids over the sage of six or seven can use on their own. I was really impressed with how they look on our nails and the amount of fun that we had applying them. It's not often that I go into "girlie mode" but I did with these fingernail tattoos. If you are looking for something fun for girls to do at a party or before going trick or treating, this is a great book to try and track down.
As always, thanks for the visit
