| AnnieSlif's Full Review: Hamburger Mary's |
Tahquitz Canyon Road in Palm Springs is loaded with restaurants, bistros and bars. (A great many of those being Thai food.) Not being in the mood for Thai and having two young kids who probably wouldn't go for it either, we went to Hamburger Mary's.
We were seated promptly and to my boys and husband's delight, had a choice of TVs to watch the Eagles game on. Seating is primarily tables, with very few booths. Not too crowded but enough in there so that the noise level was above a high end eatery. There is a small patio area at the front of the restaurant. The decor is fun - framed movie posters all with the theme of "Mary" and ranging from Mary Shelley's Frankenstein to Mary, Queen of Scots to Mary Poppins. And they do indeed have the required packs of crayons and coloring menu for the kids.
The service was great. Even though we were told that there were 5 tables in front of us, we received our drink order quickly with the server ready to take our order.
The menu selection was good. Famous for the burgers, their selection includes hot and cold sandwiches, salads, breakfast and some pasta. The children's menu has 3 selections for lunch and dinner and two for breakfast.
The burgers are what drew us there and it certainly paid off!! All the burgers are 1/3 pound and the meat is hand shaped, fresh and well seasoned. Definitely not from a box o' frozen patties! They are served with a steak knife to cut it down to size. My husband had the Classic Mary with a nice sauce - not really mayo but not thousand island either - big slice of fresh tomato and lettuce. I had the Blue Boy Burger and wow... it was great. Crumbled bleu cheese and two big slices of bacon. And yes, there is a veggie burger on the menu for our non-meat eaters out there too!
The kids menu was decent with kid friendly items but pricey. The grilled cheese is large slabs of sourdough with plenty of cheese. The chicken fingers are just killer!! Nicely breaded & seasoned and not overcooked, served with a light dijon mustard for dipping. My 6 year old isn't a mustard fan and he asked for more of this! The kids' meal is the entree, side, drink (with a cup they keep of course) and small sundae for dessert.
The sides are pretty standard: cole slaw - nice and fresh, potato salad with bacon and seasoned french fries. Personally, I would have liked to have gotten thicker fries and a smaller helping.
The end price for a family of four was $45. Not at all bad when you include 3 beers in that tab. The Classic Mary burger w/side is $6.99 and the Blue Boy is on the "more expensive" end of the menu for a reasonable $8.99. For a place that is well above 'greasy spoon' but below the bistro style, the price is well worth it!

Notes, Tips or Menu Recommendations Don't be shocked when the bill comes in a cute red shoe! There is a $2.99 charge to split a plate/dinner so if you don't think you can manage the burger, try that. Best Suited For: Kids and Families
