Recently, a friend (http://www.epinions.com/user-tpodd) and I have begun a debate--where can you get the best burger in San Francisco? See, I had recently dined at Burger Joint, and was blown away by the food. Todd, however, insisted that Hamburger Mary's offers superior eats. So, we've decided to bop around town and compare.
We began at Hamburger Mary's, a funky-cozy bar and restaurant. I won't dwell on the atmosphere, instead getting straight to the point: the food. For the sake of comparison, at all the restaurants I attend I will order the exact same three items: hamburger, cooked medium-rare; fries; black-and-white malt (vanilla ice cream and chocolate sauce).
HAMBURGER
Mary's serves up a very good piece of meat. Juicy, tasty, and properly cooked. The meat isn't treated in any special way--its simply a fried patty of good ground beef. The accoutrements were all fresh and complemented the meat well. Their daring break is serving the burger on wheat toast (perhaps appeasing the 'crunchier' aspects of the San Francisco life style). The toast is a bit too dry and crackery.

FRIES
Mary's provides very standard french fries, the likes you've had in any number of restaurants. While basically good, they're not "potato"-y enough for my tastes. This isn't a plate of fries that you HAVE to devour.

BLACK AND WHITE MALT
Pure dreamy heaven. Most diners skimp on the chocolate sauce and malt, providing you with little more than a vanilla milkshake. Mary's provides healthy doses of all ingredients, to the point where there's some crunching of malt powder (yum!). Don't bother trying to sip it through a straw--it's thickness requires spooning.
