After my dear husband dropped and cracked my older crock, I saw an opportunity to "upgrade" to a fancier, feature-filled version of the old slow-cooker. I tried a Rival with a hinged lid (scv550H-R, 5 1/2 quart). I would love to write a review on that stinking thing, but I can't find it on Epinions... that's another story. After it was returned to Kohls, I went on the hunt with the unfortunate mindset that bigger was better.

I chose this generously-sized, 6 quart model with nice big handles on the base. The crock removes for easier washing. I did not choose one with the electronic controls because I was concerned it would be one more thing that might malfunction. This Hamilton Beach has the following simple settings: Off, Warm, Low, High. The lid is glass and is fitted with a rubber gasket to help seal the lid in place during travel. The lid can be secured to the base with clips on either side near the base handles. The hooks on the lid are plastic and clips that secure the lid are metal. I have not had any trouble yet, but there seems to be the potential for the plastic to break. There is a place on top of the lid to attach the included black ladle. Convenient for us church ladies and traveling cooks!
Consider your needs and choose the size of your slow cooker accordingly. This slow-cooker is a great choice for those who will be making larger amounts of food. Based on my experience with previous slow-cookers, this one seems to cook a little "hot" on the low setting.
How about the food that comes out of it? That's really what counts. I have ruined food in the slow-cooker due to not filling it up with enough food. Food comes out great when the manufacturer's directions are followed... go figure!
