Pros:Timed brewing and brew strength options. One container for brewing and filling.
Cons:Dispensing spout works poorly for 4 cups or less. The machine always drips after dispensing.
The Bottom Line: I would avoid this coffee machine if brewing few cups and due to design flaws.
I purchased this Hamilton Beach 48465 12-Cups Coffee Maker as an alternative to the common machines featuring glass 10-12 cup carafes. The carafes are so easily broken, become stained, and are often more expensive to replace than the coffeemaker itself. I thought this product would be great for easy dispensing, the ability to brew both hot or iced coffees, and the overall ease of use.
The dispensing mechanism is terrible, especially so at four or less cups of coffee. At this point, it's easier to pull out the uncomfortably hot reservoir and pour manually to dispense. This defeats the easy one-hand dispensing, "brewstation" that the products boasts about.
Additionally, the spout is situated too close to the machine itself, leaving very little room for dispensing. This causes frequent spillage, requires a cup/mug that is very thin-lipped, and often necessitates a very specific angling of the receiving cup/mug to properly dispense. The spout always drips a little bit after use, so the catch-tray below needs to be cleaned after every use.
Overall, I have brewed large amounts of coffee with this machine for the past few years and can attest to its durability, but this is counteracted by the daily frustration of having it constantly leak all over the counter when the mug/cup is incompatible with the poorly-designed spout, the coffee has reached too low of a point for it to dispense properly, and I have been unable to find a compatible permanent gold filter to cut down on the wastefulness of paper filters.
