Pros: small, easy to clean, it is a Hamilton Beach product
Cons: it isn't very powerful
I find myself about to write an opinion about something I don?t recommend. This is new to me! Most of the products that I use, I use because I like them! Of the few I don?t like, most of them are not available here to write on! I must tell you now, why I don?t like this blender.
It all started this past summer. We were in the middle of a 4 month Navy move. We were living in Pensacola, and would be there for 2 months. While in Pensacola, I decided to try the Slim-Fast Diet. I have a VITA-MIX 5000, that I just adore. Unfortunately, the Vita-Mix was on its way to San Diego, where it would wait for our arrival.
After giving it some careful thought, I decided to buy a smaller inexpensive blender to use in Pensacola. As I was looking at blenders in the Navy Exchange (I promise that this is NOT the only store I shop at!!), I opted for one that was the second from the cheapest.
I chose the HAMILTON BEACH 8Blend Master. I chose this one instead of the cheaper model because this one claimed it could crush ice. I enjoy crushed ice in my drinks, so it was a no brainer that I would buy the $25.00 blender. I justified this by also telling myself that it would be more practical for mixing a shake or two each and every day.
This was in July 2000. This blender served me very well until January 2001. I won?t say it has stopped working, I just really expect it too any day! I have NEVER used it for anything but for my Slim-Fast shakes! All I put in are 16 oz. of cold milk, 1 scoop of powdered drink mix, and 2 -3 medium sized ice cubes occasionally.
Right from the start, I was not at all satisfied by the ice crushing power of this blender! It would leave my ice cubes intact, only slightly smaller. It made absolutely no difference if I tried to mix it for 1 minute, or several, the result was always the same!!
Sometime around the middle of January, I noticed that it whirred really slowly, and sometimes smelled as if it were burning. I stopped using the blender for awhile, I was afraid of it starting a fire. I called Hamilton Beach, and because they were unable to account for the slow whirring and odor of smoke, they told me it was not a warranty issue. I was told that I must have put ice in it!!!! THIS MACHINE WAS SOLD TO ME WITH THE BOX SAYING IT WAS POWERFUL ENOUGH TO CRUSH ICE!!! Was this just a ploy for me to think I was getting a better blender?!!?
My blender sat idle for almost a month. My husband went into the kitchen one morning to make my shake for me. I had not mentioned my blender trouble to him. I listened to the blender. It sounds sick!! It whirs and whistles, as if straining to mix powder and milk!! I did tell him not to put anymore ice cubes in it!!
I feel that this product was sold to me under false pretense. If it had cost me more than $25.00, I may have pursued a more thorough explanation, and probably a new blender. As it stands now, I am just playing the waiting game. When this blender does die, I will probably choose a more recommended model! I will definitely consult Epinions FIRST!!
Maybe I am being too critical of this blender, since I have used a Vita-Mix!?!? I don't think so! This blender is not doing what the manufacturer promised!!
