Pros: No breakable carafe, brewed good-tasting coffee.
Cons: Takes up a lot of space, ANT MAGNET!
The Bottom Line: Our problem may have been a fluke, but if you have ever seen an ant anywhere in the vicinity of your home, I wouldn't chance it.

| bluegrass4ever's Full Review: Hamilton Beach Brew Station Coffee Maker 47224 |
In spite of its bulk and the fact that it takes up more space on the kitchen counter than a conventional coffee maker, we loved the Brew Station at first because of the ease of use, no glass carafe to contend with, and it brewed excellent coffee. Then I started to notice ants crawling around the heating element under the bucket. This was a surprise since I keep a clean house and don't have an ant problem anywhere else in the kitchen. The ants continued to return no matter how often I cleaned the unit, until one weekend when we were away for a couple of days and I came home to find a NEST of ants around the heating element. UGH! I cleaned it off again, and discovered that the ants were coming from INSIDE the casing, where there was no way to get to them. I had the bright idea of putting the unit in the freezer overnight. Sure enough, there were dozens of dead ants on the freezer floor the next morning, and when I turned the unit upside-down and shook it, a few more fell out. Ugh again! The ants appear to be gone for now, but if they return, I'm going to junk the Brew Station; If I had wanted an Ant Farm, I would've gone to the Toy & Nature Store.
Info added 3/31-- Several readers asked that I tell more about the Brew Station's features, so I am adding the following information: The Brew Station has a 12-cup capacity. Instead of a carafe, it uses a heavy-duty unbreakable plastic bucket. Coffee is dispensed in much the same way that sodas are dispensed from fast-food restaurant soda machines; i.e., you just press the cup against the lip of the dispenser button so there's no pouring involved. The dispenser will accept a coffee cup up to 6" tall. The unit has a clock and you can program it for the time you want it to start brewing. It does not have any way to program the brew strength of the coffee. Until the ant problem appeared a couple of weeks after we bought the Brew Station, the only drawback I found with the unit was its large size (14" high x 9" wide) and the amount of space it takes up on the kitchen counter.
