Pros:Easy to use and make a single serve cup of coffee, so extras to buy
The Bottom Line: A simple to use single serve coffee machine that is cheaper than others, plus no extra coffee containers to buy.
Last Christmas I received the Hamilton Beach The Scoop Single Serve Coffee Maker. Unlike many other popular single serve home coffee machines, The Scoop does not require the sure of specially made cups or pods. With The Scoop, you use your own ground coffee to make a single cup of brewed coffee.

The Scoop has a stainless steel look and is a relatively compact coffee maker. It is 12½ inches high, 6½ inches wide and 7 inches deep. Its compact size takes up little space on my countertop.
What makes up The Scoop
The Scoop is a simple to use coffee maker, but it does have some parts to know about.
2 brew baskets
filter holder/secondary filter
flip cup rest
How to use The Scoop
To prepare your cup of coffee, you’ll first need to pour your desired amount of water into the water reservoir. The reservoir is at the top of the coffee maker, with a flip top lid. The machine will not work without water in the reservoir.
Next the brew basket must be inserted into place. The brew basket holds the ground coffee. It is made of a metal mesh that can brew the coffee while keeping grounds from filtering through. There are indicator lines to give an idea of how much coffee to use. It may take a few tries to determine just how much ground coffee is needed to suit personal tastes. There are 2 baskets, so the extra that is not being used can be stored on a small hook found on the side of the machine.
The basket gets placed into a secondary filter. This removable filter has a finer mesh to hold back stray coffee grounds. This filter is housed inside the filter well.
The baskets, secondary filter and filter holder are all machine washable. The secondary filter needs to be cleaned, or at least rinsed out after each use. I have found coffee grinds in the secondary filter after every use. If it the grounds are not rinsed out, the filter will get clogged and the coffee will drip out of the maker very slowly. Yes, I found this out the hard way.
The flip cup rest can allow for varying sized cups while eliminating splatter from drips. It can handle anything from regular coffee mugs to larger travel mugs. It can sit flat along the drip tray at the bottom of the coffee maker for a large mug, or flipped around so that a smaller mug will sit in the higher up in the middle of the machine. The flip cup rest is also machine washable. We use the flip rest on occasion when I use my travel cup or when my husband uses his large mug. Sometimes it takes a little jiggle to move the rest, but it is still pretty simple to do.
Once the coffee maker is prepared, there are two setting choices – regular and bold. My husband and I both prefer regular coffee, so we have not used the bold setting at all. After choosing the button of your choice, a blue light will go on and the coffee will begin to brew. If there is no water in the reservoir, the light will flash, then the machine will shut off. It will only take a moment or so for the coffee to prepare, then the machine will automatically begin to dispense the coffee into the mug. The machine will shut off about 30 seconds after dispensing is done.
Caring for The Scoop
As mentioned earlier, the removable pieces are machine washable.
It is recommended to clean out the coffee maker once a month with a water and vinegar rinse, and more frequently for areas with hard water.
Cleaning the outside of the machine is simple. The front may have some coffee splatter, so a simple wipe down is needed every so often.
Our Experience with The Scoop
I had been originally intending to get a Keurig Mini but I was concerned about the cost of the K-Cups, or even using the reusable K-Cups. When I discovered the Hamilton Beach The Scoop Single Serve Coffee Maker, I knew this would probably be the right coffee maker for us. At around $70, it was also $30 cheaper than the mini Keurig. It is easy to use and easy to clean. It’s quiet and it doesn’t take up much space. The brew basket allows me to control exactly how much coffee I want to use.
My coffee normally comes out hot, although occasionally it doesn’t stay hot as long as I would like. This is probably my only minor complaint about the entire machine, and it isn’t a problem that often.
If you are someone who wants to make a single serve cup of coffee using your own coffee rather than having to buy all the extras, then The Scoop is a great choice.
