I don’t recall how long we have had the game Hands Down, but it was sitting in the back of my son’s playhouse. I pulled it out, dusted it off and made my son play with my so I could write an epinion on it.
Out of the box Hands Down comes with a Hands Down slap machine, which comes fully assembled, and a deck of numbered cards.
Each player starts by choosing which hand they are going to be. They are brightly colored hands in blue, pink, yellow and green.
Play begins with the dealer dealing four cards to all players. The rest of the cards are placed face down on the table. One person starts by pulling a card from the deck. If they get a match, they must hit their hand on the slap machine. All the others must do the same. The last person to hit their hand is considered the “loser”. The person who hit the hand first gets to pick one of the “losers” cards. It’s easy to figure out who was last because when you hit your hand it stacks the colors from first to last. So the color on top was the last to hit their hand.
If the person doesn’t receive a match, they can try and trick the other players into hitting their hand. If they fake hitting their hand and one or more players actually does hit their hand. The person doing the “faking” gets to pick a card from their hand. If someone hits their hand without having a match, another player must pick a card out of their hand and place it at the bottom of the deck.
The game continues with everyone trying to make matches from their cards. The winner is the person with the most matches when there are no more cards in the deck.
There are a few special cards. There is a smiling joker. This card can be paired with any other card to make a pair. There is also a sad joker card. You do not want to have this card in your hand when play is over.
There are two ways to play this game. Both games are similar as far as play goes but differ in scoring. One way, the numbers on the matched cards are added up. The person with the highest score wins. So if your matches are 5’s and 2’s, your total score is 14. If you are have the smiling joker, it is worth 10 points and if you have the sad joker, you will subtract 20 points.
As my son got older, we have started playing the game this way. This helps him with his math skills. We also play rounds. The first person to reach 500 points wins.
The other way to score the game is to count all the matches as 1 point and the smiling joker as 5 points. If you have the sad joker, you will subtract 5 points. Again, you can play rounds but we only play to 50.
The game is most fun with three to four people and is recommended for children six and older. The Hands Down slap machine is made of a durable plastic. The hands get slapped rather hard and they have never gotten broken.
The game is lots of fun but gets rather noisy. Between the hands slapping and the laughter and squeals, it’s gets loud. This is one game we have to put the dog out before playing because he also gets really excited and runs around barking. I guess he wants to join in the fun also.
If you are looking for an exciting game to add to family game night, I would highly recommend Hands Down. If you can stand the noise, this is the game for you- Hands Down!
