I bought this gate after I visited a friend who had three of them and swore I'd be happy if I bought one, so I did. My friend was right. I not only have a 20 month old son, but two dogs that I must keep gated in or out of the kitchen. It was truly a pain to have to set up a gate every time I wanted to keep my son or the dogs confined, especially when I was trying to hold onto anything else at the same time. I could not be happier with this gate and it has saved me a lot of aggravation since I don't have to use my hands to open it.
The gate was super easy to install. It is important that you continue to tighten it until the top and bottom part of the gate clicks together. Otherwise it doesn't take much to get it to open. It comes with a handy little wrench to help you do this. Once it's installed, it won't move! To open it, you simply press down on the food pedal and the gate releases, and with a simple push of your knee - it opens! The metal bars make it easy to clean and and difficult for a little one to climb :) The pedal is difficult enough to move that a small child would have to weigh a ton or be incredible agile to jump hard enough to open the gate. Believe me, my little guy has tried and tried.
The only thing I'm not too thrilled with is the width of the opening that the gate has. It's rather narrow and while I have no problem walking through it with my child on my hip, it is quite difficult to get through if I have anything in my "free" hand. I have to lift it over the gate to get through. It's a minor inconvenience that is outweighed by the hands-free advantage.
I did have to purchase the gate extension kit which is a breeze to add as it simply slides right into the gate itself. Be sure to measure your opening before purchasing the gate to see if you'll need the extension.
