| sio7's Full Review: Handspring Treo 300 Handheld |
Went through four Treo 180s and on my third Treo 270 within the last 15 months. The reasons shall be explained shortly.
I love using this phone/pda as it gives me nearly everything that I really need in a phone/pda combo. Of course being based on the older Palm OS 3.5, most of the functions are considered basic by today's standards.
Anyway, there are many reviews and opinions put forward regarding the Treo and my aim is not repeat or argue them here.
The Treo is a great device as long as you understand that it is based on last generation's Palm OS 3.5 and that it certainly won't win points in the looks department.
However, that is not my main gripe. The main issue is that it has a manufacturing defect mainly contributed by the plastic flip which causes it to break! I am not saying that this is a possibility; rather I am saying it is an eventuality! If you use it frequently enough for any length of time, it WILL break. Simple as that.
In my first paragraph above I mentioned that I've been through a number of Treo 180s and on my third 270. The reason why I put up with all these is because, there simply hasn't been a device out there that is as useful to me as the Treo.
I've used the Nokia 9210 communicator but find it's size quite restrictive and Symbian applications to be quite limited (as compared against Palm). Have also tested an O2 XDA (very good looking, flashy, attention grabbing device) but put off again by the bulk and mainly because I cannot stand scribbling on-screen as the primary means of input for the PDA. The main thing about the Treo is it's keyboard. It's just great!
Anyway, have discovered that the Treo 600 has been released in this region. Have high hopes for it and will definitely post a review once I've tested it.
Ok, one main thing. Where I live, it's also quite convenient to get the Treo swapped for a brand new unit when the flip breaks of if anything else does not work while it's under warranty. However, I would imagine that if the warranty expires or if it's really inconvenient to get the device swapped, then it would definitely be not worth the hassle that I've been through.
