Pros: No artificial colors or flavors; No high fructose corn syrup
Cons: High in sugar and calories; Not widely available
Do you love soft drinks the way I do? If so, then I bet I don’t need to remind you that soft drinks are not the healthiest beverage for your body. They are made with either excess sugar or with artificial sweeteners that could have long- lasting negative effects on the body and many health experts agree they should be minimized in your daily diet. But there are some soft drinks that rate better than others and one that I like quite a bit is Hansen’s Mandarin Lime Natural Cane Soda.
Soft Drink Facts and Figures:
Hansen’s Mandarin Lime Natural Cane Soda is a clear, bubbly soft drink that looks like a glass of Sprite or Seven- Up when poured from the can. The product bubbles away at first, but settles down rather quickly and emits a nice fragrance of citrus.
Hansen’s Mandarin Lime Natural Cane Soda is a flavorful soft drink with distinct tastes of mandarin oranges and limes. The flavor is not one of juiciness, but rather one of citric oils, like those you would taste if you squeezed the rind tightly from each of the two fruits. The soft drink is highly refreshing and tends toward the sweet side due to the addition of natural cane sugar, but is not as overly sweet as other fruit- flavored soft drinks.
Hansen’s Mandarin Lime Natural Cane Soda is made using pure triple filtered carbonated water, sugar, citric acid, natural flavors with extracts of Yucatan mandarin and Colima lime. The product contains no caffeine.
A 12 oz. serving of Hansen’s Mandarin Lime Natural Cane Soda contains no significant levels of any vitamin or mineral. There are 39 grams of carbs, comprised entirely of sugar, with no fat or protein. There is no sodium, but a standard 12 oz. serving does include 150 calories.
Hansen’s Mandarin Lime Natural Cane Soda is a delicious soft drink from Hansen’s- a company that has made a name for itself as a manufacturer of natural soft drinks free from the preservatives and artificial colors so common in most soft drink brands. Hansen’s makes a large line of regular and diet versions of its soft drinks, all made with an emphasis on natural ingredients and an avoidance (with the exception of the sugar substitutes) of things artificial.
I drink a good amount of soft drinks, but I have tried over the years to reduce my intake and consume a more balanced, more varied array of beverages. With soft drinks, the road to better drinking is sometimes difficult because soft drinks are so widely available and they often contain one or more undesirable ingredients. With Hansen’s Mandarin Lime Natural Cane Soda, the consumer finally has a soft drink free from the preservatives and artificial colors that plague so many soft drink brands. Fruity soft drinks almost always contain artificial colors to make them look more appealing to the eye, along with other ingredients best left out of one’s daily diet. Hansen’s Mandarin Lime Natural Cane Soda is a clear soda with all natural flavors for better health and, in my opinion, far superior taste.
Fruit- flavored soft drinks are often overly sweet and very unnatural in taste, but Hansen’s Mandarin Lime Natural Cane Soda is quite different and you will know, upon taking the first sip, this is not your typical soft drink. The flavor is quite pronounced and even a little sharp. The taste is not fruity in the sense of tasting juicy, but it is rather fruity like it is flavored with oils. And if you look closely at the ingredients, you will see that this observation is accurate. There is no actual fruit juice in this product. Instead, it is flavored using natural fruit oils, which is why the taste is so pronounced and yet doesn’t quite taste the way a mandarin orange or lime would taste if squeezed directly into a glass of water. The flavor here is actually better, and I am glad that Hansen’s makes the product the way they do.
As for the overall ingredients, the one strike against Hansen’s Mandarin Lime Natural Cane Soda is the same strike that most all regular soft drinks have, and that is the excessive sugars. In the sugar category, Hansen’s Mandarin Lime Natural Cane Soda is just as bad as the rest of them, with 39 grams per 12 oz. can. However, one must remember that Hansen’s doesn’t contain any high fructose corn syrup and the sugar, while certainly something less than desirable, is natural cane sugar and should be fine for most healthy adults, provided they consume in moderation.
Hansen’s Mandarin Lime Natural Cane Soda is not an easy product to find. The larger superstores usually do not carry it at all and even some of the chain grocery stores refuse to stock it because the higher price tag is likely to discourage sales. True, it is about 30 to 50 percent more expensive than the mainstream brands like Coke and Pepsi, but the superiority of the ingredients and great taste are worth the money. Still, it does some effort to find this soft drink and it does lack the ubiquitous availability of other brands.
I will likely always have soft drinks in my diet, at least to an extent, and Hansen’s Mandarin Lime Natural Cane Soda is one brand I will continue to drink when I can find it. The flavor of mandarin and lime isn’t going to be compatible with a wide range of foods and I admit that the taste is going to be a little too sharp for some palates (dilute with a small amount of water, if you feel this way). But this is a delicious product overall and definitely better than the average soft drink on the market.
