I purchased this receiver as a replacement for my AVR 500 which I had to return because of a problem with the DTS decoder. See my review of the AVR 500 for more details. I decided to give them another chance because of the good experience we had with their support and their reputation for excellent products.
Some improvements over the old model are a more intuitive menu system and a few extra input and output connections. In addition it has their EZ-set feature which will automatically configure the output level of all your speakers for optimal sound. It's not perfect but it gets close. I found I liked the center channel output to a bit higher than what they considered "optimal" but overall it did a pretty good job. It has a Dolby Digital and DTS decoder and plenty (at least for my system) of optical, coax, component, and s-video inputs and outputs. It also has a set of front panel inputs so you don't have to pull the receiver out if you want to hook a video camera.

I currently use the AVR 510 as the receiver for my home theater in addition to using it to play CDs, records, and occasionally even tapes. It produces excellent quality sound and so far I have had no problems with it. The reliability of the previous model, the AVR 500, was definitely questionable but this model seems to be of much better quality. If you do have a problem, Harman Kardon's customer support is very good and they have always helped me to resolve any issues I had.
