| butanemopar's Full Review: harman/kardon HK695 2 Speakers |
I bought these 2.1 speakers from the Harman/Kardon factory store on ebay a year ago as remanufactured models. I've always liked Harman/Kardon products and had good luck with them, so when I was in the market for PC speakers, they were at the top of my list.
I paid $65.00 including shipping for these OEM H/K remanufactured models. They came in a factory box with manuals and a one year warranty. So the warranty is up by now, and the speakers are doing great.
FEATURES
This system is a 2.1 speaker system with two Champaign glass shaped satellites and a subwoofer with Bass, Treble and Surround Sound volume controls.
The satellites have dual aluminum Odyssey series drivers and a 5 1/4 inch cardboard Magnum super woofer. Frequency response is from aprox. 35Hz to 20kHz.
The right satellite speaker has volume control on it. This system will electronically remember your volume set, so no need to fear being blasted if the system is unplugged.
The sub unit has Bass control for the bass EQ and a Treble knob for the Treble EQ. In addition to those is a Surround knob that is part of the VMAX faux surround sound system.
I've never been a fan of faux surround sound from two speakers before, but this system actually works quite well. The VMAX circuitry when activated ads more depth to the music, enhancing the spatial soundstage. It's not totally surround sound, but listening to several musical selections with the Surround VMAX on, felt like I was really at the concert with my eyes closed. Many people don't like this faux surround stuff and may choose to leave it off. It's personal preference. But believe me; the faux surround system really does work on this speaker unit. I leave it on all the time.
My favorite feature of this system is the pure clarity of the music it produces. Fidelity is far more important to me than the mere 40 watts of the system. I don't need to crank the volume up until my ears bleed. When the volume is maxxed out, I have yet to hear any distortion or fatigue from the drivers. It sounds just as clear at full volume as when it's at a soft level.
The subwoofer is so well designed on this system. For a year now, and 12 GB of music, Ive never heard the subwoofer bottom out or make farting noises through the air port. It's all bass, all clarity, all the time.
CONCLUSION
This is the best 2.1 PC sound system Ive ever heard. Those who have trouble with the audio quality, most likely have poor sound cards. Because this system really sings even when directly hooked up to a radio or portable CD player. For a mid price between 50 and 75 dollars, you can't go wrong with the Harman/Kardon Champaign shaped 2.1 PC speaker system.
