Pros: Great high range in "sweet spot" Bass is adequate
Cons: Slurry Midrange
The Bottom Line: My recommendation is that you should go and buy them, even if you don't have a dell.

| samcates's Full Review: harman/kardon HK695 2 Speakers |
When I Bought my first computer, I did alot of shopping around. And in 1999, the best all around buy I found was the Apple iMac. I still have the Apple iMac, runs great.... When the model I had was introduced, It came with Harman/Kardon Oddesey speakers built in. Well, after a coulple of bass intensive songs, I blew those...While they worked they sounded pretty good for only being 34 MM in diameter.
When I set out to find the replacements, I knew Bass would be a HUGE factor. I would coensider myself an audiophile, and I wanted to hear the fingers moving across the strings of the guitar.
While browsing at an Apple specialty store, I came apon a pair of Harman/Kardon 695 Speakers, set up on display for their Power Mac.
I started fooling with It and cranked it up, and WOW, I was impressed off the bat. The highs were crisp, and the lows were low...(one note) When listening to some types of rap at high volume, you can hear air "chuffing" through the port on the bottom of the sub). For a Sub/Sat system, the crossover between the Sub/Sat is seamless. You cannot tell where the bass is coming from.
The speakers have a "blow Protection" on them, so when you crank it too loud, they cut out, until you turn it down, which can be annoying. The only types of sounds these speakers have trouble producing are the claps and some of the really highpitched jumps in songs. otherwise audio reproduction is awesome...
but once you stand up the sound does sound muffled.
the VMAX system works very well. it over emphisizes the midrange, and adds a reverbaration so, it makes the sound seem more spatial, so it fills the area more.
If you use VMAX at high volume, there can sometimes be audible distortion over ceartain frequancies, on ceartain types of music.
Sub-woofer placement is key when placing.
Aim for putting the sub in a corner. In rooms (sqare ones) a corner is the place of highest pressure, and when you put the sub there, it can move more air. and when it moves more air, it sounds alot louder and more pronounced, than if it was say in the middle of the room. Under a desk works too.. If you place the sub on the desk, the system sounds horrible.
All In all, these speakers are a great buy, and if you can snag a pair off of E-Bay for under 70 bucks coensider it a great buy.
