Quarrymen's Full Review: Sony MegaStorage® CDP-CX355 300-Disc CD Chang...
My purchase of the Sony CX 335 was somewhat by chance. My 5 disc cd player had finally been laid to rest after a 10 year life. I decided if I was going to replace it, I might as well get a combo cd/dvd player, After a bit more research, I realized I could get a massive storage player for a bit more. So I bought a 200 disc cd/dvd player. Soon after hooking it up I found out it didnt play cdr or cdrw. Well, thats about 10% of my collection I wasnt willing to sacrifice. So, back to the store I went, and purchased this product. OK, enough background...heres what your looking for.
Ive read some say the sound quality is subpar. I couldnt agree less! Ive found this player to have a sharp, crisp sound. I may not be an audiophile, but I am a music fanatic. This player is as clear as any I have heard.
The layout of the machine is average. It is sleek, and not as large as I would have anticipated. The display is a blue color that is easily seen at night. The controls on the machine are also well layed out. There is a problem though. They left off the seek feature on the machine. Not the track skipping, but the ability to fast foward or rewind any paticular track is only accessible on the remote, not on the machine itself.
The functionality is where I find the bulk of my problems with this. The biggest problem is the ability to store artists in the machine. You have a total of I belive 16 spaces to store your info on each disc. Thats not enough room for many of the titles of my cd's, forget about the artists name. The ability to store the artists name would have made locating a disc much easier.
A second problem if a disc is stored in a location, has its name saved, then moved to another spot in the holder, the player wont recognize it. This is another major problem for me. I have about 175 cd's, and I like to keep them alphabatized. However, it took me about 2 hours to store all my cd's and input the names. If I could move them and have the machine remember what cd it is (like what WinAmp, or most if not all music player do on the computer). I could just relocate the cd's. Instead, I have to reinput ever cd title, which I am not about to do.
2 other small problems I have...First, if you are making a product that can store a large amount of discs, why not give it the ability to connect to the CDDB to automatically recognize the cd? Maybe Im a dreamer, but that would be nice. Second, this player only displays foward time as opposed to countdown time. Seems like a silly function but my older Sony player had it and gives me the ability to make tapes much easier because I know exactly how much time is left.
The machine does have some very nice functions though. First, the ability to input titles with your keyboard is a huge timesaver. Second, the disc eject feature (it pushes a cd out a hair) is very nice because grabbing a cd in between several others is a chore. The backlit function of the machine also is very cool. It has a color for each 100 disc section. Its not really useful, but it looks very cool in a dark room.
One final note. People often think (myself at one time included) that its silly to buy a 300 disc holder if you dont have 300 discs. Well, the point is that now you can hold all of your discs, and not have to swap any.
