I have a lot of guy friends who swear by Guinness beer, and will ONLY drink that when we go out. For me, though, 1/2 pint of Guinness and I'm ready to call it a night. While obviously a high quality beer, it's just too heavy and thick to enjoy as a "drinking" beer. Harp, on the other hand, shows the same distinct quality as Guinness while being much more drinkable either with or without a meal.
This is by far one of the most flavorful and versatile beers I have tasted, and has become a favorite in my fridge. It is one of the only beers I know that is liked by people of all "beer categories." My friends who usually enjoy lighter beers such as Heineken or Molson also have found Harp to be a great alternative. But other people who only drink heavier beers like Guinness or Becks don't consider Harp to be too "wussy" for them.
The reason for its mass appeal seems to be that it is rich in taste, but not in quality. So it has the same sort of taste as Becks Dark, but without the weight. It can be a bit difficult to find in the average grocery store, but I have not had too much of a problem. And it is generally reasonably priced-comparable to Sam Adams, Heineken, or Killians.
This is always a beer that I recommend to people looking for something new to try, and they are almost never disappointed. Whether out at a bar, or home eating dinner, Harp is one of the best beers around!
