| WBDBaj's Full Review: Harry Caray's |
It doesn't matter that Harry is dead - his place has fast become a Chicago gathering place for sports fans and just plain hungry people (with money). When you see Harry's building, it stands out for the color of the brick, and the almost Swiss nature of it. I don't know what it's called, but you have to walk a few blocks from The Miracle Mile to find it.
When you walk in, you notice dark mahogany wood doors, beautiful wood trim, and the noise! The bar has several large screen TVS, and room to stand or sit while you watch and drink or nibble. People are Chicagoans, not travelers, which is always a good sign. Dress is casual to casual nice.
Seating is done in several areas, with rows of white linen-clothed tables and booths lining the walls. On the walls are pictures of the Cubs, Harry, Harry's awards, Harry with celebrities, autographed celebrity photos, sports paraphanalia, and general Chicago history. Floors are beautiful hardwood, and the effect is very clean and fun.
The menu has steaks, chops, pasta, and chicken - traditional, but delicious. The side dishes include huge asparagus, potatoes as big as Wrigley Field, and everything your heart desires. The atmosphere is enjoy yourself.
Generally speaking, Harry's is a delicious and reliably good place for dinner. The prices are hefty, but this is Chicago. Occasionally, one runs into a celebrity eating there, but basically it's a younger moneyed crowd.
The servers are honest about what's good, and make recommendations willingly. The knife steaks are nicely heavy, and everything is very good and satisfying.
Harry's is delicious, upbeat, traditional, and fun. Holy Cow! You can buy a Harry's teeshirt too. A real treat!
