| webboy's Full Review: Harry Caray's |
...it is! A home run! Holy cow!
Harry Caray is, and was, Chicago. His restaurant is blessed with a beautiful building, a prime location, and as it turns out, great food!
First Impressions
It might surprise you to discover that Harry Caray's is an Italian restaurant. This is somewhat odd given the division of the building into a formal restaurant and a bar area. It's even odder given that the bar area serves the same Italian food as the restaurant; don't expect to come here and get a burger and a Bud during the Cubs game. A Bud and pasta primavera is more like it.
On both occasions I've visited, I've dined in the bar area. You don't need reservations (first come first serve), and it feels cozy.
The Food
Bar patrons are given unlimited free potato chips as an appetizer, and they're quite good. The formal meal is your standard Italian fare, with an extensive wine list, and fair prices. I've enjoyed the chicken parmigiana, which is served with a heaping serving of mozzarella and drowned in tomato sauce. In other words, perfect.
Portabella mushroom salads are huge in portion, and also come recommended. Portions overall are very large.
The Service
Service on the bar side is quite good. Food is served only past 5pm on weekends, as a warning, so kick back and enjoy a beer - there's a large selection including, of course, Bud. Our waitress for our drinks was quite attentive and friendly. Our waitress for our food was not as prompt, but still good overall.
Decor
Cubs! Harry! Bud! What more do you need? Walls of autographs greet you at the door (Rick Sutcliffe! Ryne Sandberg! Elton John! Elton John?) and old-time ads, personal photos, and Cubs stuff is featured at every table. The restaurant side plays it very straight, featuring only autographed jerseys and much more muted decor - green and white being the theme colors here.
The Bathrooms
I can't not mention that Harry Caray's has the absolute best men's bathroom "doorman" in town, John. I'm serious. He'll spin you a tale and entertain your socks off after you realize just how full and satisfied you are from the meal.
The Bottom Line
Harry fans, Cubs fans, don't miss this. If you like hearty portions of Italian food, Harry's got your number.
