"Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets" by J. K. Rowling is the second book in the series and continues the excellent writing from the first book. After finishing the first book 2 days after I got it, I was very eager to get into this one as well.
As Harry is preparing to return to Hogwarts School for Witchcraft and Wizardry, he receives a warning telling him not to go back to school, or something bad will happen to him. Thinking that nothing could be worse than spending more time with the Dursleys, his muggle relatives, he decides to return anyway.
Shortly after being reunited with his friends at school, strange things begin to occur. Harry starts hearing "voices" that no one else can hear and students start turning up PETRIFIED! It seems that some one has opened the Chamber of Secrets and let loose the horror within. It is known that the Chamber can only be opened by Slytherin's heir, but just who is it?
Draco Malfoy belongs to Slytherin house and is known for his ruthless attitude. Harry Potter can speak Parseltounge (snake language); a rare talent last seen in You-Know-Who. Hagrid the gamekeeper was expelled as a student the last time the Chamber was opened. Professor Snapes, the head of Slytherin house, is looking to create a new opening for Professor of Defense Against the Dark Arts. Harry must figure out who opened the Chamber and how to combat the menace while under accusation from all sides.
In addition to all your favorite characters from the first book, we are introduced to Ginny Weasley, Ron's little sister who happens to have a crush on Harry, Moaning Myrtle, a ghost who haunts the girl's bathroom, and Gilderoy Lockhart, the new Defense Against Dark Arts Teacher. Lockhart is a preening, self important, attention hog who teaches exclusively out of his own autobiographical books.
I thought the plot was very well done and has enough twists and turns to satisfy the mystery/suspense crowd while still being entertaining to children. This book is even better than the first one and expands the magical world that is the backdrop for this highly engaging series.
