Gavvin's Full Review: J. K. Rowling - Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's St...
It took me a long time to get to the point that I actually wanted to read the Harry Potter books. I am generally turned off by great media hype and few things in the last year have had as much hype as this series by J. K. Rowling.
The Harry Potter series is billed as being for children and rightly so. It is very easy, entertaining reading and should pry children's eyes off the television until they have finished them. It also appeals to the kid inside of most adults. Rowling has created a marvelous world of magic and mystery that exists right alongside the very world we live in today. Whereas muggles (non-magical people) like you and I drive a car to work, wizards and witches fly brooms or travel through fireplaces using floo powder. It is this imaginative thinking that makes Rowling's books so interesting.
In the first book of the series, "Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone" we are introduced to Harry, an 11-year-old boy whose parents died in a car wreck when he was only a year old. The wreck left him with a lightning shaped scar on his forehead and in the care of his aunt and uncle for the last ten years. Harry's world is suddenly turned upside down when he discovers that his parents were a wizard and witch and were murdered by a dark wizard. Harry himself is the only survivor of the attack and has magic ability as well. It is because of this ability that he is accepted to the prestigious magical school known as Hogwarts.
At Hogwarts, Harry and the reader are introduced to a magical world where mail is delivered by owls, pictures move and talk, sports are played on brooms and homework consists of learning how to cast spells, brew potions, and handle odd flora and fauna. The book follows Harry through his first year at Hogwarts and introduces us to a wonderfully diverse cast of characters that is truly brought to life through Rowling's pen.
After finishing the entire series, I heartily recommend it to all kids, young and old who want to slip off into a magical world for an evening or two. The books are engaging and funny and will leave you wanting more.
Harry Potter has never been the star of a Quidditch team, scoring points while riding a broom far above the ground. He knows no spells, has never help...More at HotBookSale
