| mh330's Full Review: Harry's Burritos |
Being a little further away from the dining mecca that is MacDougal Street, Harry's Burrito sometimes gets overlooked (I know I walked by it on almost a daily basis for 2 years before I ever went in). Besides, what's Cal-Mex, anyway? Some kind of weird California health-nut thing? Am I going to get a burrito with sprouts?
Well, maybe, if you ask for them. Either way, Harry's has really great food, at reasonable prices. I won't say cheap, because $9 for a burrito is not poor college student heaven, but for NYC its not a bad deal. I've tried a few of the funky combinations and despite my initial reservations (a burrito with nuts and raisins?), everything I've tried has been very good. I don't actually know about the ingredients used, but at least you can FEEL like you're eating healthy.
My favorite is the BBQ chicken burrito. Absolutely delicious, tender chicken breast loaded up with a mild sweet BBQ sauce and plenty of rice. Top it off with a margarita, and you're all set. Not that I'm a margarita expert, but this is the only place that I've had one I actually liked. I'm a little disappointed with the standard chips and salsa--the salsa's very fresh and good, but is spoiled by really oily chips.
The atmosphere of the place is relaxed enough, with slightly dim lighting that makes you feel you can stay for just one more drink with your friends, and just chat. There's usually not a wait, and when there is, its not long enough to complain about.
The service, however, is hard to describe. It's not so much bad, as strange. I've walked in at 5:50pm to an almost deserted dining area, and been told that we can't sit at a table until 6pm. Instead, we can only eat at the bar. What?!? We can sit in 10 minutes, but not now?
Anyway, if you can deal with the occasional quirk, the food is definitely worth it, especially if you're willing to try Mexican food with a little kick.
