| popsrocks's Full Review: Hartz Advance Care OnceaMonth Flea & Tick Drops fo... |
I have been very happy using Frontline Plus on our dog. He had been very happy too. It kept him flea free. Last month my wife came home with this Hartz Product. It was just $4.49 vs the $20 we were paying for the Frontline. Knowing the Hartz name is supposed to stand for a quality product, I agreed with the change. The savings sounded terrific too. Chip our dog is not very happy.
Chip is a two and a half year old Cockapoo weighing a bit under 15 lbs. He's a wonderful dog who is very loyal to all the family. Chip's breed sheds so little that it's known as a "non shedding" breed. We have absolutely no hairs around the house. It's wonderful! Now this review is about the product and not our wonderful pet so let me continue.
APPLICATION
We are told by the manufacturer to open one of the three small squeeze bottles and apply the contents to the dogs back between the shoulder blades and evenly down the rest of the back. This is a bit different from the other product that has us put it just between the blades and not tracking any further down.
I followed the directions with my 15 year old daughter holding Chip as I separated the hair and applied the product evenly to the skin of his back. This is a process better done with two people unless your dog stays completely still.
There was little odor and the application was easy. Chip was completely flea free before the application of this new product was introduced to him.
A VISIT TO THE GROOMER
Chip seemed fine for about a week when we took him to his usual groomer. I received a phone call a bit later. "Chip has flea eggs and flea dander on him!! He wasn't scratching or showing any signs of a problem the days before or that morning, but I certainly believed Chip's groomer. Our groomer does not want to have a flea carrying dog in her place. I don't blame her. She said she would give him a flea bath and then put Frontline on him. I told her to give the bath but not the application because Chip just had the Hartz product put on a week ago. The groomer almost freaked out on me saying that I should never use anything but the Frontline Plus that she had long ago recommended. Our dogs groomer is a sweet lady but when it comes to her dogs, and ours, she is extremely protective. Yikes I was in fear of seeing her when I went to pick up Chip.
That night Chip came home looking as handsome as ever and flea free. Ha, spineless me, I sent my daughters to pick him up from the groomer. Unfortunately his being clear of the fleas lasted only a week or two and once again he was covered with fleas and eggs. My daughter gave him a flea bath. We put on a fresh flea collar and then I decided to use the next bottle of Hartz One-A-Month on him. Hey, there were three tiny bottles of the green stuff in the package and I paid good money for it trying to save on our usual brand. Well I suppose 5 bucks wasn't all that much but I didn't want to spend the usual $20 plus for the other product.
I put it on him. I thought that maybe I just failed to apply it properly the first time. Once again I took great care to separate his hair and apply it directly to his skin. It was even easier this time because of his recent grooming. I applied it and now a couple of weeks later the fleas seem to be doing very well. That's right, the fleas! This stuff has absolutely no affect on them. It seems they have called all their friends over to Chip's coat too.
I suppose I have to flea free the house now and start back on our regular product.
The PRODUCT
The packaging tells us that one application will keep a dog, up to fifteen pounds free of flea and tick problems. To be fair Chip is right at that 15 lb limit, but not over it. There are three application bottles that are easy to open and apply. I thought this product would take him through the months of July, August and September. It didn't and I was at a loss as to why until I read the information on the box again. What I realized was the information that I needed was what was NOT written on the box. It said nothing about killing flea eggs or larvae. That was because it doesn't do a darn thing about them at all! In my case the lack of thorough reading and trying to save a few bucks brought troubles to my dog.
It is possible this product did everything it said it would do, that is get rid of most adult flees in a couple of days. Unfortunately those fleas party a bit while still hanging around and they leave their eggs and larvae to start up an even bigger party at a later date. This is not long term help for my dog Chip. The poor guy is scratching away at those little critters.
There is a warning on the packaging stating not use the product on dogs 12 months or younger and aged dogs. Always read the warnings. It also mentions that there could be a sensitivity and redness of skin from this product. It didn't affect Chip at all.
The usual keep out of reach of children and pets also apply.
FINAL THOUGHTS
Trying to save a few dollars and not paying attention as to what a product does or does not do isn't a good combination. Though I should have read and looked into this product deeper, it is still useless to me and Chip if it doesn't break the full life cycle of fleas. The product says it is also effective against tics. I didn't see any problems there.
I just purchased a six month supply of that other product over the Internet today. We'll keep bathing Chip and use a flea collar, that doesn't work all that well, until the product comes in. Hopefully we will all be back on track soon.
