Pros:Easy To Use, Nice Strong Bristles, Easy To Clean, Inexpensive
Cons:Not good on knots.
The Bottom Line: I think this is a really good brush for using on cats, and that it is a nice and inexpensive option for maintaining your cats fur.
I have three cats, 2 of them short hair, and one Persian-mix white with long hair. While at the grocery store I decided to pick up one of the Hartz Slicker Brushes for Cats to give a try on them. It seems like I am always having problems with cat hair being left everywhere around the house, and the brush seemed like a great way to sit them down and brush out the loose hair. At least with this method, I would have the control of where the hair ended up (the trash).
The brush itself is made of a tough plastic, with the handle having a nice rubber that makes it easy to grip while using. On the end of the handle is a heart (which I could live without), denoting one of the trademarks of the Hartz Company. At the end of the brush is a flat surface that has the bristles extended at an angle towards the brush itself. It is fashioned that way so when you brush the cat towards yourself that the bristles can get deep into the hair of them. The other thing of note is that this is a pink brush, which could be a turn off to some consumers, but it didn't really matter to me.
Pulling out the brush for the first time, I wasn't completely sure that the cats were going to "dig" it. I tried it on the big short-hair first, and she really liked it, asking for more as I used it down the back of her head and on to her back. It turned out that both short haired cats liked it, because it was a lot like getting petted to them and the brush was just another way to grab some attention. Putting it to use on the long hair, she really enjoyed it as well, as it really got into her thick coat well. It also quickly started amassing hairs that had come loose.
After a few strokes on the long haired cat, it was necessary to clear out the brush and pop the leftover hair into the trash. It seemed to work really well at pulling out all of the loose ones, and it made her coat look a lot better when it was groomed. The only problem that I came across was when I tried to use it on some of the knotted hair on the long haired cat. This brush was definitely not intended to work through those knots, and doesn't do much with them. When it gets that bad it is about time to cut them out, because this kitty looks terrible if she gets to many knots going.
I think that this is a really good brush when it comes to maintaining the coat of a cat, and if you keep up with the brushing, it is going to work perfectly. It is quite easy to clean out, and even easier to grip while you are brushing that feline friend. As I said it’s not intended for knots, but if you have a short haired cat, this is going to be a 5-star brush for you. I have seen these Hartz brushes at many different grocery stores as well as pet stores, and I think it is a good purchase if you want to deal with cat hair in a productive manner. This one cost just over $3.00 and I felt it was something that I could easily give a high recommendation.
