Pros: A great family game and ice breaker game. Lots of excitement.
Cons: Takes time to learn how to use the game for electronically challenged like me.
The Bottom Line: Catch Phrase is a fun and very exciting game. The newer electronic game is even easier to use and enhances the thrills and laughs.

| popsrocks's Full Review: Hasbro Electronic Catch Phrase Game |
Under our tree this year we found not one but two Hasbro Electronic Catch Phrase games. This could be expected because the original Catch Phrase game has always been a family favorite. It was just a matter of time to update electronically. This game is is also listed under Milton Bradley. It seems to be the very same game to me. Maybe one company owns the other. Please leave a comment if you know the difference.
Anyways the Hasbro unit that I have is made in China and is blue and silver in colour. It weighs a pound or so with the batteries. They must be changed using a small Phillip's screw driver.
The game is played in what I can describe as a mix between Password and Hot Potato. The people playing can be from four to a great number of people playing around a table or chairs in a circle. We have had groups of up to sixteen playing and it still keeps the excitement going for all. There must be an even number of players. Teams are seated every other person. The game piece, which I will in continueing this review refer to as the Disc, is passed from one person to the next in a clock wise direction.
The person who has possession must give description of a word that is on the disc. They may give clues but may not use any part of the word, say what letter it begins with, or state what it rhymes with. While the clues are being given there is a timer in the disc that is beeping. When the beeping stops and a Buzz sounds the person holding the disc and team mates are the loser of the round. A point is given to the other team. The point of the game is to give clues and have any teammate answer, the disc is passed and the next team tries to guess the next word quickly as to not get stuck holding the disc at the buzzer tone.
ABOUT THE DISC
For those who had the original game you will find some ease as to playing ans setting up the new game. First thing is that you do not have to change cards. Everything is done electronically in the disc. I had my daughter read the directions and give me a crash course in the game. There are 11 categories of words.
Family
Everything
Tech/Inventions
History Buff
Entertainment
Sports/Games
Geography
Transportation
Plants and Animals
Around the House
Food/Drink
Some of the words, of which there are thousands, are easy but others can be difficult for teens and younger. It depends on the kids. Some examples I feel may inhibit play of some are words like
Subpoena
y2k bug
Dalai Lama
Manifest Destiny
While some of these words may be a bit more challenging they may be skipped over for the next word listed. This is done with just a touch of a button on the disc. The negative here is that more time is wasted holding the "hot potato", disc.
Three of my children ages thirteen, fifteen, and twenty were playing the game with cousins of the same age yesterday at our New Years Day Party. They had little difficulty with the game. All I heard from our living room was laughs.
One of the great things this disc has is the words in an LED display window that are much larger and easier to read than the original game. This make for less need of those reading glasses that, with the original, were a must.
The game has been a ton of laughs with family members and also mixed groups who did not know each other. When each round begins the disc starts "beeping". As the words and clues are given and time goes by, the beeper starts beeping faster. It picks up the pace again and again. This places pressure on the player holding the disc, and the team members are hoping the disc will be passed. While the clues are being given all team-mates are shouting out possible answers. It's controlled pandemonium. It's wild!!
I didn't tell you that the disc talks to you. Yes, it keeps score and tells you who goes next. Everything is self contained in the disc, the words to be guessed, the timer, and the scoring. The laughs, fun and excitement are provided by you the players. These will be readily available!!
Catch Phrase Electronic, It's catchy.
